Posting to Russia: Yes, I do post to Russia. But delivery can take up to 4 to 6 weeks from the UK. So please be patient. I will submit a tracking number to the winning bidder, and when the packet arrives there it can be followed online using the Russian post website.

Label Conditions: Both in stunning condition, ultra fresh and clean with barely a spindle trace to be seen. The shine on the surfaces still retained and looking little short of immaculate. The cover may give clues to its age, but the first issue record barely does.

Rarity & Info: An absolute classic album and the one that really got Lou Reed noticed, it peaked at No. 13 in the UK album charts. The hit single ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ helped sales, that included the sublime B-side, ‘Perfect Day’ also featured on this set. Few would have predicted this song would break Reed into the singles charts – the fact it was played on UK radio at all was surprising due the explicit lyrics. ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ was censored in many countries, or banned altogether, but its content was overlooked here on issue. A short song covering a mix of taboos and with the return of Candy Darling, featured on his first solo album as ‘Candy Says’. The whole album has an erotic feel and hints of sleaziness, all very much part of glam-rock scene from the early years of the 1970s. This single has become Reed’s trademark song, but arguably the single’s B-side was even better, and over time, has become equally famous. This is still Reed’s best-known album and work, produced by early admirers, David Bowie and Mick Ronson, his then current guitarist who features strongly. This a very fine copy that has the matt cover – a relative small number were laminated – some fully, some front only, but this often lifts badly which can detract from the graphics. The most important factor for me is the music and sound quality, and this copy has no inherent pressing issues and plays impressively clean with little unwanted at all, that is often not the case.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): a single format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Clearly wear-prone, so a little light rubbing is seldom avoided at best, a little here near the edges and the bottom has a lightly toned. Few creases and mostly light, no sticker issues. Enough to politely remind of age overall.

Cover Back: Quite light rim impression and rubbing from the quite thick record with light creasing near the corner areas. A small mark near the top left also. The white area on the bottom right corner tip is correct and part of the graphic, all are the same.

Top & Bottom Edges: Thin, but straight with minimal wear to the top, the white bottom storage edge has darkened with light patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening very light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression mild and patchy. The vulnerable text still fully present, any rubbing generally confined to the very bottom corner.

Corners: Moderate rubbing on the lower corners, only light on the upper ones. Fine shape retained with n heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: A fine matt version of this famous glam-rock cover, just enough to politely remind of age, it should please many collectors but not for the highly discerning.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: mainly due to moderate discolouration of the white paper. This an unlined inner with two immaculate window circles with just one neat corner crease, these often deliberate to stop the record sliding out. No edge splits or repairs, this early inner has no text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Along with two stunning, virtually unmarked shiny labels, visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant Lou Reed classic plays up to, and most beyond it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. An album superbly produced by Bowie and Ronson, this captures the new Loud Reed sound and material to perfection. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing rasps or noises. I have often found the final song on the album problematical, often with crackle and clarity loss, but this example has avoided it. Few available copies will outperform this -1E/-1E stamper pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
