Label/Format: Elektra – Orig deep orange and black with textured finish. These have the very first and rare UK Elektra credits with no reference to Polydor at all – these followed shortly afterwards.

Label Conditions: Both look fantastic: ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive with only very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Side one has hardly any at all and finding a lesser-played mono copy of this record will prove beyond difficult.

Cat Number: EKL 4005.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 151 grams. A very heavy pressing as only the first issues ever were.

Country of Manufacture: Record: England / Cover: Printed in USA with the rare Elektra Records England imprint at the bottom. Again this was quickly changed and this cover, like the first issue record is much rarer (please see this text on my close-up picture).

Rarity: The record itself is scarce. First issue genuine UK Elektra mono copies much harder to find especially in such superb condition.

Original Year of Release: 1967

Matrix Nos: EKL-4005-A-1 / EKL-4005-B-1B (this also has 11-66 & 11-66 on the run-out grooves).

Brief Info: Second album by one of the truly great US bands of the late 1960s. Fronted by the charismatic Arthur Lee, this was a great prelude to the next classic ‘Forever Changes’, without doubt one of the greatest albums ever. An album of two contrasting sides with six shorter songs on side one and the epic ‘Revelation’ occupying all side two. What an absolute delight to see such a vintage classic, now 45-years-old in such stunning condition. The record visually very impressive and playing totally free of any distortion or groove-wear and little else unwanted either. This is one of the very few times I have seen this genuine original in mono that has NO Polydor credits and even the fragile US made cover is exceptional. This is another marvellous psych set that should thrill collectors of this classic musical period.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): which hardly does this one full justice. A single, unlaminated example that was printed in the US. This is the much rarer original mono cover with a dedicated EKL-4005 number on the front, back and spine. As stated above, this has the Elektra Records London, England address on a cover printed in the USA. When Polydor Records acquired Elektra, this all changed and these early pre-Polydor covers are very rare indeed and even more so when so superbly preserved.

Front: A hugely impressive front and as most will know, US covers from this era were always prone to wear of all forms. I have rarely, if ever seen a better one of these and that at least matches the superb stereo example I sold recently on Ebay. This front is clean, fresh and attractive and has avoided the usual rubbing and ringwear most seem to acquire so freely. Any creasing or rub traces are few and very light and show little. The lack of ringwear is worthy of special mention, so few will ever avoid it with a 150 gram record inside all these years. This front will prove near impossible to find better.

Cover Back: Mildly darkened to give a small clue of it’s considerable age, and I actually think this enhances it all the more. Covers of this vintage look nicer is they have matured a little and this back looks equally as lovely as the front. In terms or real wear – barely any with any rub traces few and very light indeed and again, no ringwear – so few of these will survive in this impressive condition.

Top Edge: Superb, unsplit with barely any hint of rubbing at all.

Bottom Edge: Similar for most with just small rubbing towards the ends. Minus this, I would have considered a mint minus grading.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear and minimial thickening or burring worthy of special mention. This is made with typical thick card as seen viewed end-on. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: Almost as made: solid, straight with any compression very mild indeed. All text is perfect and unworn with no splits or rubbing – this can never be taken for granted on a cover like this. Just a trace of darkening to the white surface, even this being critical.

Corners: Light tip rubs only and all retain excellent or better shape. There appears to be no tipping-in on this cover at all.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very delicate and scarce 60’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. A memorable example that sets the standard to be beaten. I state again: Polydor versions of this cover are more abundant and this UK addressed pre-Polydor US cover are genuinely rare. An unusual combination sleeve and seldom seen. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): a plain white solid unlined inner. Only slightly later copies included a Polydor style inner, but the originals had plain types. Barely aged at all with a lovely fresh appearance and no creasing or edge splits (or repairs). This was made in Great Britain.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) / EXCELLENT(+): with that first look, it almost gives a high WOW-factor and justifiably so. I have rarely seen a vintage mono Elektra record looking much better than this – with close scrutiny under bright angled light, there are fine and quite faint surface marks on side two with hardly any on side one at all. A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy very lightly, and carefully played on all the evidence – few records of this age and mode will escape totally devoid of the odd minor blemish at very best. With most seen swathed in spindle marks, finger marks with deep penetrating scratches, this one is on the other side of the fence. Visually a super copy that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful vintage record plays supremely well and even above it’s very impressive visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free stereo sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound and the mono mix has great definition and packs real punch. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed with no pops or clicks noted. Few copies will match or outperform this rarer original mono pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled. No heavy-tracking piledriver stylus have reaped havoc on this beauty with all the music and vocals sharp, clear and precise. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find significantly better and my highest recommendation is mandatory.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
