The album was recorded in January 1966 and released in the US in April & in the UK in September of that year.....So the "28.4 366" is presumably the final mix/master - to the best of my knowledge this date is only present on the very first copies initial copies pressed!!)

CONDITION

Vinyl: VG+ near EX

(Super thick heavy vinyl 1966 UK TRUE FIRST PRESS GOLD LABEL pressing which still retains its beautiful full gloss and sheen showing only some very light surface marks and inaudible wispy hairlines which do not affect the playback at all. The lp plays superbly. The record has been carefully handled by myself from new - a lovely example of this INCREDIBLY RARE original GOLD LABEL true first UK pressing of the absolutely classic 1st Love lp. The record delivers FANTASTIC sonic audio throughout, great super powerful sound clarity and only occasional minor static)

Labels: EX+

(Original Gold and Black print labels are super clean and unmarked)

LP Sleeve: VG+ near EX

(The original and iconic 'William S. Harvey' non laminated hard card sleeve (printed in USA) has been well preserved since the day it was bought nearly 45 years ago! There is some minor ringwear and light shelfwear rubbing on the seams and spine, nothing too serious. Overall the sleeve is in very solid near excellent condition with no writing, no rips, no splits or tears)

Catalogue Number: EKL-4001

1966 UK original 1st pressing issue of this extremely hard to find Elektra Gold label beauty by the legendary US 60s group LOVE

On offer here, from my own collection, is an original 1966 UK MONO 1st true pressing GOLD LABEL first UK release of the self-titled LOVE debut album, released on the impossibly rare UK 1st press Elektra GOLD LABEL!! Has original US sleeve as they were originally released. Cat.No.EKL 4001.

On this original UK 1st PRESS MONO issue the following tracks differ to the later Stereo releases; 1. Mushroom Clouds - mono version fades out 15 seconds later and therefore contains a beautiful acoustic guitar solo missing from the stereo version!! 2. Emotions - mono version ends 5 seconds later, catching the final symbol hit. 3.Colored Balls Falling - mono version fades out 4 seconds later.

Love's debut is full of jewels, a truly wonderful rock record and If nothing else, is probably the group's coolest album. For one thing, its cover is a wonderful addition to the "mid 60s sneering rock star" sweeps (the mid 60s were a great time for sneers). Of course, Dylan and the Stones still have a lock on first and second place, but these guys are still up there. On top of that, the album's aesthetic is just awesome: It's a combination of disaffected garage punk, dreamy proto-psych, Byrds influenced folk rock, and smart, soulful pop. Arthur Lee's vocals are perched somewhere between wildcat and wise man, while John Echols' and Bryan MacLean's guitar runs jangle and scream. Combine that with the suitably loose `n' ready rhythm section of Ken Forssi and Alban "snoopy" Pfisterer, and you've got yourself a hipper-than-hip mid 60s rock outfit.

The songs are cool, too. "My Little Red Book" makes the grade by virtue of being a great garage punk cover of a Burt Bacharach tune. It's got this great throbbing bass/drum/rhythm guitar thing going, and Lee's throaty bellow is just about perfect. Elsewhere, we've got a haunting drug addiction ballad with a melody that's vaguely reminiscent of "House Of The Rising Sun" ("Signed D.C."), as well as the poignant rumination of "A Message to Pretty". There's a suitably rollicking version of "Hey Joe", and a similarly rollicking, suspiciously familiar tune by the name of "My Flash On You". Best of all is Bryan's eerily beautiful "Softly To Me".

Many of the Arthur Lee compositions are the equals of the Velvet Underground's for dark, atmospheric tunes. "Can't Explain" became a set stopping song for Boston's Mission of Burma during the early eighties. We see Love's early embrace of samba and calypso with Byran MacLean's "Softly To Me" and "And More". Love's uniqueness shines through most clearly on the album's several emotive ballads: "A Message To Pretty", "Mushroom Clouds", which gives a hint of Lee's political mindset, and especially "Signed D.C.", presumably a tribute to Love's first drummer Don Conka, whose drug addiction prevented him from ever appearing on record. (He is also mentioned by last name on "You I'll Be Following".) "My Flash On You" also has an anti-drug message, which is more tragic than ironic considering the struggle with substances that Lee himself would face throughout his life. Bryan MacLean's contribution is the elegant "Softly To Me", which reveals a personal songwriting style that would culminate in what is perhaps Love's greatest song: "Alone Again Or", from Forever Changes. Lead guitarist Johnny Echols, for his part, offers "Emotions", a spooky mid-album instrumental. There is so much here to indicate Love's musical sophistication and unique style which became so apparent in "Da Capo" and "Forever Changes". This fabulous Love album is the musical equal of any debut by the great bands of the sixties. Love were a break-through band for more reasons than "Forever Changes". Jim Morrison took Arthur Lee's long stream of consciousness songs and fashioned them into rock epics like "The End" and "When the Musics Over". Jimi Hendrix appropriated Arthur's flamboyant style of dressing and moved from L.A. to London, and Hendrix's fashion style was almost as important as his brilliant guitar playing. The Byrds were already folk-rock stars on Columbia Records but their admiration of Love led to a shift from folk rock to psychedelica on "Fifth Deminson" and "Younger Than Yesterday".

This superb album is chock full of proto-punk, psychedelic surf, sterling folk-rock, with arguably the best drug/anti-drug song ever written. It's FUN to listen to, and it has a joy and exuberance, "Signed DC" notwithstanding. It's like a postcard from mid-60s southern California, before things became too "heavy" and serious. You can listen to this gem over and over and never ever tire of it!! So Love's impact on music begins with this self titled debut and curiously enough, "Forever Changes" was not fully appreciated until long after Love's dissolution as a band.
