The most indispensable collection in Fulson's vast discography. He was hitting on all burners during the mid-'50s when he was with Chess, waxing the immortal "Reconsider Baby," and swinging gems like "Check Yourself," "Do Me Right," and "Trouble, Trouble," and the supremely doomy "Tollin' Bells," here in many truncated false takes before he and the band finally jell.

Lowell Fulson was an aberration among the Chess Bluesmen: not only was he domiciled on the West Coast, (rather than in Chicago), but he also played a much more cerebral, sophisticated, cool brand of Blues , that continues to be cool to this day. So much so that one of the coolest cats around, a guy named Elvis, covered Lowell's signature tune "Reconsider Baby" on his classic "Elvis is Back" album and Savoy Brown covered his "Tolling Bells" on their classic "Blue Matter" album (both songs are featured in this album). This, Fulson's sole Chess album, lovingly compiles his classic Chess pre-1960 sides and is simply one of the finest moments of Chess Blues. Period.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(d)          True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
