READ THIS! These records are NOT sold for perfect sound quality. They’re sold for their scarcity and VISUAL grading. They’ve been in storage for a decade, and they WILL play with surface noise that can be addressed with D4 or a VPI cleaning. I can’t test-play at the minute. Please don’t bid if this is a problem for you.
So with that said…
LP 1966 Will Success Spoil Mrs. Miller and Open Interview EP! RARE and EXCELLENT!
For those unfamiliar, Mrs. Elva Miller was the Florence Foster Jenkins of the mid-1960’s. She was given a recording contract because of her fluttering, amateur-motherly singing voice, which you can’t help but fall in love with. You can’t!
Generally, she was only given one take, and if she were given more, they released the worst one. She claimed that in the examples where she was singing too spot-on for the marketing technique, they’d isolate her vocals to one track while she did her take, and then deliberately lay it over the instrumental track a beat ahead or behind, so that it sounded like she couldn’t keep time. In other examples, the instrumental track would get away from her, and she’d stop singing, start giggling and then catch up to the song where she could.
Her first of three Capitol releases was issued as her “Greatest Hits,” which included her cover of “A Hard Day’s Night.” This is her second album, which includes her cover of “Yellow Submarine.”
The result is this set of Capitol albums collected by the hip underground of good/bad record collectors! These records are so obscure that even most (if not all) compilation albums of Beatles novelty songs don’t include Mrs. Miller. A real shame!
Get hip.
Vinyl--- EX/EX. 99.5% original shine, with just one or two very short, very light lines. SO close to NM!
Plates--- F1/ G2. Machine-stamped triangle with the letters, “IAM” inside it makes this copy pressed by Scranton.
Cover--- VG+. A VERY strong album cover, with just the occasional bump and knock to the corners and edges. NO SPLITS.
Labels--- NM/ NM. 1966 brand new-looking.
Inner Sleeve--- Plastic inner sleeve with the rounded bottom. That probably accounts for the album being in such remarkable condition. Usually, these albums are at best, VG+.
RIAA--- 10. (?!) Yeah, that says 10. I wonder where that plant is from?
PROMO 45: Open-End Interview/Radio Spots and Promos
She does the announcements on her own promos on Side 2!
Vinyl--- NM/ NM. I would say that this EP is unplayed, but I played it once about 20 years ago when I bought it.
Plates--- H-1/ H-1. Machine-stamped asterisk in the dead wax makes this copy pressed in Los Angeles.
Labels--- NM/ NM. Beautiful, full-gloss, seldom-seen Capitol promo labels look like they were just pressed!
Sleeve--- VG+/EX. Paper slick is slightly too big for the 7-inch gatefold, resulting in some tears in the slick along the top, but not in the seam itself. Light dirtwear inside the gatefold. Otherwise, this is an Excellent cover to a scarce record!
If you’re a Mrs. Miller fan/collector, I guarantee that you’ll never find another one of these in NM condition…if at all. And if you’ve never heard of Mrs. Miller, you’re in for a charming and funny treat.
As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up. Thanks!)
Note: All LP’s ship outside of their album covers in order not to damage the covers during shipment.
CAUTION! There has been a startling increase in bidders canceling their bids. A word to the wise, I have started blocking any and all bidders who retract their bids regardless of the reason.
Please don’t bid unless you’re willing to honor your amount, okay? Thanks!
(Please note: Regarding play-testing, my Technics turntable has somehow seized. The tone arm is stuck in the up position, and I can’t get it to fully return to its cradle. Is there anyone out there, who can tell me if this is an easy fix? Thanks!)
