Began his professional career in his hometown Buffalo, New York, as a guitarist.
In 1978, he was nominated for a Grammy Award in recognition of being one of the best R & B songwriters of the period.

Barney Blair Perry graduated from Howard University's school of music (Washington D.C.), as a music composition major. He studied and performed with: George Benson, Jimmy Smith, Bro. Jack McDuff, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Lonnie Liston Smith, Joe Thomas and Irene Reid. Performed and recorded with Bobbi Humphrey. Toured with Donald Byrd. Wrote songs for the Blackbyrds, including "walking in Rhythm."
