What factors makes great recordings of Great Jazz artists? The record engineer, quality of the recording masters and quality of the vinyl pressing are key to great records. Early recordings by Rudy Van Gelder, Norman Ganz from the 1950’s and 1960’s were recorded from the original masters. Labels like Blue Note, Norgran, Prestige used virgin vinyl.

This recording is 50 + years old but superior quality to later pressings.  Reissues in the last few years are inferior because of restrictions on lead to cure the vinyl.  New vinyl does not give  the quality of the early recordings. The sounds made in the 1950-1990s time frame had a wide range dynamics in both mono and stereo.

Because of the record age it is likely to have scratches and scuff that cause some ticks. I heard a light crackle though out especially near the speakers. In many tracks the dynamic over power. The Cover has very light surface wear and edge wear.

Description of quality of record and cover. I include details about condition of vinyl and cover. The grading is conservative.

All records are viewed under halogen light after cleaning on a VPI wet vac cleaning machine using Audio Intelligence cleaning solution and Ultra-pure water raise. All Items have been carefully played on a Clearaudio Performance turntable

We treat grading very seriously and use the Record Collector grading scale with the addition of a (+) or (– ) to denote a slight increase or decrease in condition.

Please take the time to study the pictures and note my grading scale below

Grading Guide:

MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklets etc are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

NEAR MINT: Very close to Mint with only the slightest signs of play and the very lightest paper chaffing only to the surfaces of the record. The cover shows only the very slightest wear

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. A few ticks may be heard during quiet parts and between tracks. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
