Christian & The 2120’s started around 2008, and the debut album Nolo Contendere was released in 2010, and the songs found their way to Hollywood. Songs like “Evil Ways,” “Some People,” “Bringer Of Heartache,” “It Ain’t Cool,” “Troubled Soul,” and “06:43” turned up in TV-shows like Sons Of Anarchy, CSI: Miami, Shameless, The Good Wife, Backstorm, MTV’s Death Valley and in movies such as Puncture, Shanghai Calling, Concrete Blondes, and The Heat featuring Sandra Bullock. The album contains twelve songs with guest appearances by John Thomas (Captain Beefhearts Magic Band) playing keys on five songs from the LA sessions and Swedish Grammy nominee Klas-Henrik Hörngren playing keys on the Berlin sessions.
The album is quite subdued in parts and has a nice mix of blues, country, and late sixties rock that all blends together flawlessly. Of course there are faster and more rocking songs on here, but the album feels like the soundtrack to a great movie, especially “Into The Light” which is fantastic with the slight country feel and mellow music. The next song has a terrific fuzzy sound and crunchiness which makes “Move On” a great way to get that groove going again. For a band based in Sweden, the album has a definite American sound and feel and it’s one that I just can’t get enough of. “Catch A Train” is rocking and the keyboard playing is the highlight of the song. The singing is so heartfelt and has so much depth and emotion dripping that it just draws you into the songs deeper and deeper. The playing is great with both keyboard players giving so much to the songs and the rest of the music just takes the breath away. The album has the feel of a lost classic from 1968 with the sound being perfectly suited to that era, but not in a retro way, it just oozes the kind of class and talent that you don’t hear very often nowadays, it shows a love for the music and the songwriting that seems to be lost.
This was a total surprise for me because I had never heard this band before, well, not knowingly because of the exposure in media that they have had and I love this album. Every song on Christian & The 2120’s Moments is a winner and I just can’t get enough of this album and will be playing it a lot…so should you. (Rick Ecker/newnoisemagazine.com)
