Pittsburgh's Cynics have matured a great deal, musically speaking, in the decades they have been around, and it's a tribute to guitarist Gregg Kostelich and singer Michael Kastelic that the group's '60s garage/punk/folk/psychedelic visions of tender love and hard breakups has endured. Utilizing a revolving lineup of bassists and drummers, Kostelich and Kastelic have released five genre-spanning albums on Kostelich's own indie-wunderkind label, Get Hip.Formed in 1983 by Get Hip Recordings owner Gregg Kostelich, The CYNICS are a Garage-Punk institution.
After 6 studio albums, 2 live albums, 20+ singles and several compilation tracks, the band is still full of power and creativeness. After a long hiatus in the late 90’s the band reunited in July 2000 to play the Las Vegas Grind Garage festival (sharing the bill with the Remains, the Lyres, Swingin Neckbreakers and many others) and a successful comeback tour of Spain followed in September of the same year. These two events revamped the interest in the Cynics and fueled them with energy. They continued to tour in 2001 going from L.A. to Montreal and from Madrid to Mexico City, playing to eagerly enthusiastic crowds everywhere… In December 2001 they recorded some new tracks in Pittsburgh, released as two 7” singles on Get Hip Recordings.
THE CYNICS headed to Austin, Texas in April 2002 for the recording of their new album (first one in 7 years) at Sweatbox Studios with the mighty Tim Kerr producing and Mike Vasquez engineering. The 14 tracks were laid down in just 3 days and mixing was completed first week in June. They cover quite a dynamic range -- from howling, feedback drenched fuzzed out guitar and bass to pounding, primordial beat bashing, all the way to melodic, folk/rock and pop harmonies.
For a debut release, Blue Train Station sounds very mature in its accurate display of classic rhythm and blues tinged with portions of folk-rock, psychedelia, and Hammond organ garage stomp. More than mere camp '60s revivalism, The Cynics hit upon a style of timeless, melodic rock with momentous pop melodies. The title track chugs along like a locomotive with full-powered R&B guitar strum and harmonica blasts, while the snarling punk scream of "No Way" is aided by the use of maracas.
