The Sinatra Collection 1953-1962 (The Capitol Years)

Pressed on high-quality “Super Vinyl” by JVC in Japan and half speed mastered for optimum sound quality.

Every title ever issued by Mobile Fidelity is collectible in its own right; their pressings from 1978 through 1989 were pressed in Japan by JVC on their proprietary Super Vinyl, an exceptionally resilient, dead-quiet vinyl compound, with later issues pressed in the U.S. by RTI. These records were mastered at half speed; both the tape and the cutting lathe were run at half the normal speed, allowing the cutting head to cut a more accurate groove in the acetate.  The finished product featured dead-quiet vinyl, with improved dynamics, better imaging, and tighter bass.  By their very nature, all of Mobile Fidelity’s titles were limited-edition pressings, and The Sinatra Collection was limited to a pressing of 10,000 of numbered copies.

The set was issued in a lavish silver box and a Geodisc phono cartridge alignment tool, with a little bit of space left over (perhaps for a booklet that was never made it into the set).  Each of the albums were packaged in a special silver cover, with the albums' original artwork and liner notes printed on the posterboard stiffeners that were inserted into each cover to prevent warpage.

MINT (M): A PERFECT, NEVER PLAYED RECORD. USUALLY A RECORD WON’T GET THIS RATING UNLESS IT’S STILL SEALED. SOMETIMES THE RECORD ITSELF MIGHT BE DESCRIBED AS MINT BUT ONLY IN THE MOST PERFECT SITUATIONS.

NEAR MINT (NM): AN ALMOST PERFECT RECORD. THIS IS USUALLY OUR HIGHEST RATING. MOST TIMES A NEAR MINT RECORD (SLEEVE AND RECORD ITSELF) ISN’T GOING TO VARY MUCH FROM A MINT RECORD EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT IT’S NOT SEALED WHEN WE GET IT AND WE DON’T ALWAYS KNOW WHAT PLAYING CONDITIONS OUR RECORDS HAVE BEEN THROUGH BEFORE THEY REACH US. A NEAR MINT RECORD WOULD HAVE THE SLIGHTEST IMPERFECTIONS; VERY LIGHT RING WEAR, SLIGHT HANDLING…

VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+): THERE WILL BE SIGNS THAT THE RECORD WAS PLAYED AND HANDLED BUT WITH GOOD CARE TAKEN. THERE MAY BE SOME VERY LIGHT SCRATCHES OR SCUFFS THAT AREN’T NOTICEABLE WHILE LISTENING. SLEEVE MIGHT HAVE SOME DISCOLORATION AND RING WEAR. A VG+ RECORD IS A VERY ACCEPTABLE RECORD WITH ONLY A FEW THINGS WRONG WITH IT.

VERY GOOD (VG): THE PROBLEMS IN A VG+ RECORD BECOME MORE EVIDENT IN A VG RECORD. SURFACE NOISE MAY BE HEARD DURING PLAYBACK BUT WON’T BE OVERPOWERING. MORE GROOVE WEAR WILL BE NOTICEABLE AND THERE MIGHT BE SOME DEEPER SCRATCHES THAT AFFECT THE SOUND. LABELS MIGHT HAVE STICKERS OR TAPE ON THEM.

GOOD (G), GOOD PLUS (G+): WILL PLAY THROUGH WITHOUT SKIPPING AND GROOVE WEAR AND SURFACE NOISE WILL BE CONSIDERABLE. THE SLEEVE MIGHT HAVE SEAM SPLITS, WRITING, RING WEAR AND MORE TAPE ON IT THAN A VG RECORD. WE GENERALLY DON’T LIST RECORDS AT GOOD OR GOOD PLUS UNLESS ONLY THE RECORD ITSELF OR THE SLEEVE IS IN THIS CONDITION WHILE THE OTHER IS AT A HIGHER GRADE.

POOR (P), FAIR (F): HEAVY WEAR. RECORD IS CRACKED, BADLY WARPED AND SKIPS DURING PLAYBACK. SLEEVES ARE SPLIT ON ALL SIDES, WATER DAMAGED, AND HAVE A LOT OF WRITING. WE DON’T LIST POOR OR FAIR CONDITIONED RECORDS.

ALL OF OUR RECORDS ARE GRADED VISUALLY BUT IF AN AUDITORY GRADING IS NECESSARY SEND US A MESSAGE AND WE'LL TRY OUR BEST TO RESPOND IN A TIMELY MANNER.
