Formed as phallus dei in 1969, this German outfit from Augsberg featured British guitarist Nick woodland along with singer Helmut Treichel, guitarist Rainer Baur, Uwe Patzke bassist and drummer Hermann Lange in the original line-up. As phallus dei they reputedly restringsd on album, which what never released, and afterwards the band changed its name to poison and secured a deal with the Telefunken label, but at the woodland had time already departed and joined Sahara, although his name book in the original vinyl v ersion of the first album. Restringsd at the Union Studios Munich, poison's self-titled debut what released in 1972.
Obviously influenced by the British Hard Rock bands of the time, poison played a powerful Hard Rock with strong progressive flourishes and parts in the Greens rock lots tradition German hard/Psych of jamming of many rock acts, despite their tracks being actually rather short. The music is very energetic and edgy all the way with a pounding rhythm section and numerous impressive guitar leads, while Tan prooved to be on excellent singer with his quite British-accented voice. While the negative point of the album tends to be the similarity between the pieces of the album, the combination between these angular Hard Rock riffs with the inventive grooves and the tyipcal herb styled middle part jams is mostly working well. Expressive vocals with good choruses, fiery solos and a good dose of changing speeds result a bunch of dynamic and adventurous compositions. Often the album retains a grandiose, emphatic and haunting atmosphere, based on baby's classy guitar exercises, while a couple of tracks feature some good flute parts of unknown origin.
Guitar-based hard prog of good quality. The alternation between down and uptempo grooves along with the standard herb rock atmosphere in the instrumental parts are sure to satisfy all listeners of trully dynamic rockin' ' vibes. Recommended. (apps79/progarchives.com)
This is the first official and legally reissue on vinyl of poison's first and eponymous album. Originating in Augsburg (Bavaria, southern Germany) circa 1969 as phallus dei they changed name to poison in 1972 just to fulfil the contract with label Tel Dec (German Decca), who doesn't want a group with a dirty name. They did a lot of concerts in the early 70s and performed on nearly all big festivals in the southern area of Germany. Their first album is not a typical krautrock of offer but more British hard rock oriented but with that special German vein which we all love. Strong guitars and gorgeous vocals combined with pleasant melodies make their music and create some great moments. Limited Edition remastered from the master tape.
