Description
ULTRA RARE "CUSTOM" RECORD PRODUCED BY WHITNEY RECORDS. Whitney Records was owned by the organist on this record, Lorin Whitney, until 1978 when it was purchased by MCA. Before the studio was acquired by MCA it housed the Whitney pipe organ, played on many releases by Lorin Whitney, often accompanied by the Haven Of Rest Quartet.
This is a "Custom" recording, not a Private Press, but a record made especially for the "Katherine Schmidt", Contralto Soloist. Interestingly, the label spells her name with an "e" in the middle as in Katherine, while the name on the plain white jacket has an "a" in the middle, as in Katharine. I have searched on the web for a gospel singer or an opera singer with the name of Katherine (or Katharine) Schmidt. The closest I came to a "hit" was a 4-day run, March 7 to March 10, 2007, of the play, My Fair Lady, at the Avery Fisher Hall, Off-Broadway in New York. Katherine (with an "e") Schmidt was identified as one of the sopranos listed in the cast. This listing was on page 168 in, "Theatre World 2006-2007 - The Most Complete Record of the American Theatre edited by John Willis, Ben Hodges", found on Google Books.
Anyway, the plain white jacket has some foxing/soiling marks and a faint ring on front jacket, totally blank on the back side, no splits or marks. LP was stored in a plain white inner sleeve and LOOKS GREAT, with a faint scratch perhaps on clean vinyl, I'll grade VG++.
So a bit of a mystery, but likely a very interesting and listenable gospel record, "Custom" produced by Whitney Records featuring Lorin Whitney on organ and a somewhat unknown (to me) soloist singing 12 songs on this RARE LP.
