Record Grading
I have provided the following guidelines for grading records, as it is the standard that I follow. I try to grade conservatively, and describe the most major flaws.
There can be a big difference between the condition of a record and it's cover jacket. Because of this I provide two grades for many of my listings, one for the record, and one for the cover.
I try to grade records accurately. I have found over the years that records don't always play or sound the same on different systems. I will refund your purchase price (less shipping costs) upon return of the record if you feel my description was inaccurate or incomplete in some way. I want you to be happy with your purchase.
Mint (M) : records in this condition are perfect in every way.
Record - the record has never been played, both the playing surface and label are perfect. Depending on how it was handled, even still sealed "new" records may not be mint.
Cover - The jacket, inner sleeves, and other inserts are all crisp, clean, and have no flaws at all. No fingerprints or other signs of handling are present.
Near Mint (NM) : records in this condition look like they were just opened and played once.
Record - the record has no obvious signs of wear. The record is not warped, and there are no scratches visible even when held to the light.
Cover - the jacket or sleeve has no bends or creases, the seams are not worn, and it is not dirty or smudged. There are only the slightest signs of handling.
Excellent (EX) : records in this condition look used, but like they were taken good care of.
Record - the record is has only light wear and scuffs. Some very light scratches can be seen when held to the light, but they are almost unnoticable when played.
Cover - the jacket or sleeve shows only very light wear, and it will have only a few minor flaws such as a light crease, slightly turned up corner, light discoloration or smudge.
Very Good (VG) : records in this condition are still collectable, but are well used.
Record - the record has some wear and light scratches but is very playable. The surface noise is noticeable, especially between tracks, but does not overwhelm the music.
Cover - the jacket or sleeve shows some wear, and will have some but not all of the following: a split or worn seam, smudges, tape, light writing, crease.
Good (G) : records in this condition are not worth much unless they are quite hard to find.
Record - the record is worn, scratched, and has significant surface noise. It may be warped but can be played through without skipping.
Cover - the jacket or sleeve is worn and has split seams, and may include smudges, tape, some writing, and bent corners.
Poor (P) : records in this condition are worth almost nothing except for very rare items.
Record - the record is heavily worn, and badly scratched or warped. It skips when played, and the background noise overpowers the music.
Cover - the jacket or sleeve is heavily worn with multiple seam splits, and may have stains, heavy writing, tape, water damage, heavy creases, and tears.
