AMAZON REVIEW (edited)

Recorded in 1970 and generally regarded as a Brit-Jazz peak, this reissue of “Love Songs” is welcome. The Westbrook (little) big band features a cast of a dozen or so top-notch musicians from the period which makes for a dense sound & texture. There’s a lot going on individually & collectively, scored & improvised, but the arrangements are so good that it sounds warm & natural rather than cluttered or overbearing.

“Lovesongs” is interesting to compare with Michael Garrick’s “Heart Like A Lotus”, both being 1970 Brit-Jazz ensemble concept albums charting the course of a love affair, both unashamedly romantic & lush, and both led by the voice of Norma Winstone (mostly wordless vocalese but with a few ballad-like songs with lyrics).

“Lovesongs” shows the influence of rock with repetitive swinging (moderately) funky rhythms & a wash of electric keyboards and guitar (Chris Spedding) driving things on, but overall it’s closer to soul jazz groove than pyrotechnic jazz rock.

Soloists include Mike Osbourne - alto sax, George Khan – tenor sax & Paul Rutherford – trombone.

CONDITION:

A NOTE ABOUT CONDITION.

I try to describe the physical condition of each disc I sell as accurately as I can. My descriptions of the discs’ condition are based on what I see under bright halogen light, based on the factors which I know are of importatnce to serious collectors. I do not have time routinely to play-grade (ie listen to) the discs I sell but I am happy to do so if required. Just ask!

DISCS

1) Scratches: I very rarely list records with visible scratches.

2) Bruises (ie marks which look like scatches but which do not actually cut into the grooves and are therefore silent and (in my opinion) not a problem.

3) General appearance of handling, even very careful handling. If a record has been (even carefully) handled with the fingers contacting the grooved area, the normal grease of even clean skin is transferred to the disc surface and slightly degrades the visual appearance of the playing surface leading to a disappointingly dull looking disc .

4) Hairline marks: These are minute extremely fine scratches caused by the disc’s being removed from and returned to an unlined paper inner-sleeve and are usually only visible in strong light.. They do not sound are not considered a problem by most collectors.

5) Spindle marks: these are marks around the spindle hole caused by moving the disc aound while the label is in contact with the spindle while placing the disc on the turntable. They are rarely a guide as to how many times the disc has been played as the previous user may have located the spindle hole accurately on hundreds of occaisions! On the other hand a spindle hole surrounded by hundreds of spindle marks is an immediate indication that the disc has seen serious action!

SLEEVES

With sleeves I always describe the condition of

1)Front glazed finish, whether it is showing any pressure from the discs edge (ringwear) or if it has has become dull or “tired” looking.

2)The open edge where the disc has been inserted and removed. Often there are “C”-shaped creases to the right hand side of the front sleeve where the sleeve has been bent in the process of removing the disc.

3)The spine: often slightly damaged or ceased if the disc was originally displayed in a shop browser which only supported the lowere half of the sleeve. Particularly if the shop crammed the browser units too fully.

4)Corners: I usually describe the sleeves’ corners with regard to actual damage, slight wear or even just slight compression where the sleeve has had a light knock but the corner has not really been damaged.

5) I always mention any writing, mould or foxing (faint brown marks common in old books – again a form of mould).

Disc: SUPERB

A few spindle lines around both holes suggest that the disc has been played a few times.

Viewd in bright sunshine there are hairlines on both playing surfaces, but under normal conditions the disc looks in superb condition with no damage and few signs of handling.

Bright rainbow sheen and no marks, faults, scratches or other imperfections.

Sleeve:

Some signs of handling.

Upper and lower edges show some slight wear but no serious damage.

Corners OK with the slightest wear.

Slight wear to spine.

Ring pressure line to rear and (less so) to front.

General feel of having been handled rather more than the disc!
