Comments: (Read This Before Bidding!!!)

If you're looking for a pristine copy of The Midnighters Greatest Hits, this auction is not for you.  This copy was found in a Thrift Store in much less than perfect condition.  I'll start with the cover.  It was covered inside and outside with mildew.  Not completely, but enough to keep me sneezing.  Because of this, I had to tear the cover apart to clean the mildew out of it.  I have cleaned the cover as best as I can, and have taped the cover back together using "invisible" cellophane tape.  The overall effect came out pretty well, and you can even read the title, artist and record number on the spine.  However there is still noticeable wear and tear on the cover.  What sets this cover apart from the ones of other auctions of the same title is that the block surrounding the group photo is RED.  This is the only copy of this album I have ever found that has the red block; all others I've seen have a yellow block.  All copies I've ever seen being auctioned on eBay also had the yellow block.  So, this copy's claim to fame is the red blocked photo on the cover.  According to Goldmine's Album book, the red blocked cover is much more rare and valuable than the yellow blocked cover.

The vinyl... side 1 plays all the way through without skipping.  There is noticeable noise at the beginning of the side's intro, and in between the tracks, but it seems to diminish somewhat the further the tonearm gets.  It doesn't overpower the sound, and it actually plays better than one might expect from looking at it visually.  Side 2 has one "hang" in it during the song "Annie's Aunt Fanny".  I have pulled out the ol' magnifying glass on this one.  I was expecting to see a chunk of dirt or something that was still clinging to the vinyl (I gave this album a very thorough cleaning).  Instead, I found a "ding" in the surface.  Not a scratch mind you, but a "ding"... as if someone dropped a very heavy tonearm at that spot.  If you apply pressure to the right side of the tonearm as it reaches that spot, it will continue to play through the "ding" without hanging.  Of course, that becomes quite inconvenient if you set the player for "repeat" play.  The rest of side 2 plays fine all the way through.  Again, the noise is more noticable at the intro to the side and in between the tracks, and it seems to lessen as the tonearm progresses.  Visually, the vinyl has more than it's share of surface scuffs and light scratch lines, but the album plays much better than it looks (except for the "ding" on side 2).

So... in conclusion, I will repeat... if you are a collector and are looking for a pristine copy of this album, THIS AIN'T IT.  However, the red blocked photo on the cover is quite rare and there should be collectors out there waiting for this one.  This album will also make a good "filler" until a better copy comes along.  Just make sure you save the cover!!!  As for the starting bid amount... I don't play the "reserve amount" game.  I know what the album is worth in it's current condition, (considering all things... I'm calling the condition "FAIR"), and I'm starting the bidding at slightly below that amount.  This is a one time auction.  If it doesn't sell on the first go around, it goes back on my shelf and stays there.
