  X ary Castro Neves has always been chic. Chic and low-profile . His music reflects his personality . Exciting , inspired , sophisticated , cosmopolitan, free from provincialism that both hurt and still always protested before any attempt to call evolution in MPB . Design orchestral pianist , composer winding melodies , arranger extreme refinement , led his career in a unique way . Never ran against commercial formulas of success , never was part of " cliques " . Perhaps it is virtually unknown in his own country while abroad is revered even by a very young audience , attracted by the balance of your recordings worshiped in the setting of " dancefloor jazz " .   If this debut album , " Mario Castro Neves & Samba SA " , the only one recorded in Brazil - in 1967 - before opting to live abroad. The eldest in a family of six siblings , born November 12, 1935 , increased breathing music by Leo drummer who later devoted himself to the law , the triplets Zeca ( amateur clarinetist ) , Iko ( bassist then converted to architecture ) , Oscar , guitarist , arranger and producer of international fame and precocious Peter Paul, the Pepe Castro - Neves , singer for several years settled in France . Besides Sister Maria Lina , supportive of all of them , and attentive spectator of jam sessions that rolled on weekends in the large family apartment in Umari 35 in Orange .   By 1955 , the quartet formed by Mario , Leo , Oscar & Iko - informally known as American Jazz Combo presentations in Radio Broadcast of Petropolis - turned the quintet " The Moderns " with the accession of Manuel Gusmão on vocals . " Our repertoire included songs from Mario and American standards ," recalls Gusmao, who would go down in history as bossa albums debut of bassist Jorge Ben ( " Samba New Scheme " ) , Flora Purim ( " Flora 's MPM " ) , Meirelles ( " 5 cup " ) and Wanda Sá ( "Sort " ) . " At that time , Mario , who had studied with the Austrian Hans Graff , was the greatest composer of the group , because Oscar would begin composing in 1957 , when we started playing on TV Rio , on Saturday night , a program run by Walter Clark . "   Then Mario befriended Bôscoli Ronaldo , who composed the suite " The Girl and the Rose " , and the samba " Bottle Atonal " , whose lyrics have anticipated the bossa aesthetic rebellion : " complain to Dad if I was born so modern / ask Mom if prac discordant lives in me / I took the bottle and I was lulled into atonal / and my dream is packed by an infernal pace " , ending with " I wonder if you will put a samba so wrong / If there is a Brazilian who does not plays the tambourine . " Was never recorded, but it was essential for all meetings . Took part , including the repertoire of the 1st Festival de Samba Session - sung - gasp ! - By the Bôscoli . Held on September 59 at the Amphitheatre of National School of Architecture , had Carlos Lyra , Alayde Costa , Nara Leão , Norma Bengell , Sylvia Telles and brothers Castro Neves as main stars .   " I had a degree in chemistry and via music only as a hobby ," says Mario , who left the group shortly before the group - renamed Oscar Castro Neves Quartet - embarking on the famous Bossa Nova concert at Carnegie Hall in NY , in November 62 . " Oscar took over as pianist, traveling with Iko on bass , Roberto Dias Bridges on drums and Henri Percy Wilcox on guitar . Leo and I stayed in Copacabana , enjoying the beach . Married, had three children and I separated . One night in 1965 , I went to watch the Copa Trio , the Gusmao , playing at the Bottle 's Bar at the Lane . I gave a broth and decided I was not going to drop the piano . "   Gradually , a new concept has matured , creating a quintet with two newcomers from Pernambuco to Rio ( bassist & drummer Norman Novelli ) and two vocalists Cariocas ( Thais Amaral & Biba ) . Thus was born the " Samba SA " whose first and last album came in 67 for RCA at the invitation of artistic director Geraldo Santos . Finally reissued on CD after disputed the gold weight by collectors for decades , has twelve original tracks plus four songs recorded in the same sessions . Three of them ( " Costa Brava " , " Rosa Morena " , " Highway of the Sun " ) included only in the LP " The Wonderful Latin - American Sound of Brazil " , published in the U.S. in 68 . Another ( " Carolina " ) entirely unprecedented . " I loved this idea of ??joining all sixteen tracks , because for once people can hear the complete work " celebrates Mario .   On the menu , a well- balanced and balanced mix of songs consecrated and other little known . Classics of Bossa are recreated with wholesome daring, getting a spice that still sounds timeless modern because , in the most literal sense of the term . Even the best behaved tracks like " And Nothing More ," " Corcovado " and " Carolina " , get a tasty sauce thanks to new harmonic solutions .   With the wisdom of the best arrangers , Mario fancies the intros and endings , without forgetting to stir in the stuffing . His piano as conclusive as economic ooze swing , especially in " Candomblé " ( full of rhythmic variations ) and " Nana " , treated with less seriousness than usual , with the left hand by availing various drums .   In the vocalizations , the sum of small details end up doing big difference , even when perfecting the dissonances , the ladies dispense the words in deliciously sexy " From Play ." Or the chorus of " Come Swing " , transformed into irresistible riff . Or syllables stretched in unusual partnership Simonal & Chico Feitosa in "Right On Out " , Latinized without slipping into the realm of caricature . All details worked out so subtlety that may even go unnoticed by untrained ears , accustomed only to what is implied rather than exclaimed .   Some themes were composed especially for the disc. To the consternation of purists chatonildos , Direct English : " Once More " singer Thais, and " Yearning Lovers" charming bossa Mario , a la Mancini , lettered by second wife , Sarita Levy . Another creation leader, " Costa Brava " is one of the highlights of the session due to his amazing melodic way , highlighting the voices as sliding tubes. " Bye Bye Blackbird " , immortalized by Miles Davis in 1956 , becomes the first samba . The need led to " Keep Talking " , the famous " Amazon " John Donato recorded in the USA by Chris Montez , contaminates from the first bar. Moment of calm compared to demonic treatments given to " Death of a God of Salt " ( including the quotation " Samba Blessing " on solo piano) and " Rosa Morena " and " Highway of the Sun " , transmuted into samba- jazz highest strain .
