OUM KALTHOUM:
She was an Egyptian singer, songwriter, and film actress. Active from the 1920s to the 1970s. She was known for her vocal ability and unique style and was a true social phenomenon in the 1950s and 1960s. Her albums are among the best-selling in the world, with some 80 million copies in total, which made her one of the best-selling singers of all time in the Arab world. She was given the honorary title of Star of the East and was also known as the "Lady of the Arabic Song", "The Voice of Egypt", "The Fourth Pyramid of Egypt" and "The Nightingale of the Nile". She is considered a national icon in her native Egypt and one of the greats of Arabic singing along with Mohammad Abdel Wahab, Abdel Halim Hafez and Farid Al-Atrash.
