"United We Stand" (LP, DES-18046) is the debut album by the British pop group Brotherhood of Man, released in June 1970 in the US (August 1970 in the UK) on Deram Records.
This album is primarily known for its immensely popular and enduring title track, "United We Stand," which became a worldwide hit, reaching #13 on the US Billboard Hot 100, #9 in Canada, and #10 in the UK. The song, written and produced by Tony Hiller, was envisioned as a simple love song but resonated globally as an anthem of unity.
At the time of this album's release, Brotherhood of Man was not the familiar four-member lineup that would later win Eurovision with "Save Your Kisses For Me." This early incarnation of the group was essentially a collective of session singers, assembled by Tony Hiller, and featured lead vocals from artists like Tony Burrows and Johnny Goodison on various tracks.
The album itself largely consists of optimistic, well-produced pop, MOR (Middle of the Road), and soul-influenced songs, designed for broad appeal. It also includes their third single, "Where Are You Going to My Love." While the album itself wasn't a huge chart success beyond the title track's impact, "United We Stand" remains a pop classic and the album serves as a snapshot of the group's beginnings before their later evolution and even greater international success. The DES-18046 catalog number refers to the US vinyl pressing.
