Historic Performances Recorded at the Monterey International Pop Festival, catalog number MS 2029, is a classic live album released in 1970 on Reprise Records. The LP captures a portion of two of the most legendary sets from the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival: The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Otis Redding.
The album is a split release, with the first side dedicated to a truncated version of The Jimi Hendrix Experience's performance and the second side featuring Otis Redding. The festival was a pivotal moment for both artists, marking their major American debuts to a massive, mostly white, rock audience. Hendrix's set is famous for his incendiary performance, culminating in him setting his guitar on fire. Redding's performance, backed by Booker T. & the M.G.'s, is considered a career highlight.
The album was released posthumously for both artists and achieved significant commercial success, reaching number 16 on the Billboard 200. While later, more complete releases of both sets have become available, this original LP remains a significant historical artifact of the era.
