Released in 1971, Meddle is the sixth studio album by Pink Floyd and is often considered a pivotal transitional album in their discography. It bridges the gap between their earlier psychedelic, Syd Barrett-influenced sound and the more cohesive, thematic progressive rock of their later albums like The Dark Side of the Moon. The album was recorded in a series of sessions between the band's touring commitments and was a collaborative effort, with all four members contributing to the songwriting.

The album's centerpiece is the 23-minute epic "Echoes," which takes up the entire second side of the LP. It is a multi-part suite that showcases the band's developing sonic palette, featuring a wide range of musical moods and sound effects. The first side of the album is a diverse collection of tracks, including the hard-rocking instrumental "One of These Days," the gentle acoustic piece "A Pillow of Winds," the singalong "Fearless" (which interpolates the Liverpool football anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone"), the jazzy "San Tropez," and the quirky "Seamus" featuring a howling dog.

The US release on Harvest Records with catalog number SMAS-832 has unique cover art compared to the UK release.

Critical Reception and Legacy:

While Meddle was not a concept album in the same vein as their later work, its cohesion and flow are highly praised. The album was commercially successful, reaching #3 on the UK charts and #70 in the US, and was certified 2x platinum in the United States. While initially receiving mixed reviews, its critical reputation has grown over time, and it is now widely regarded as one of Pink Floyd's most important works. "Echoes" is particularly acclaimed as a masterpiece of progressive rock and a cornerstone of the band's live performances for years to come.
