The Commercial Hit: No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach’s In)

Released in January 1966 on Liberty Records (Catalog # LRP-3439), this album is a fascinating artifact of 1960s pop culture. It is one of the rare instances where a TV commercial jingle became a Top 10 pop hit.

  • The Commercial: The title track was originally written as a jingle for an Alka-Seltzer TV commercial. The commercial famously showed various midsections (stomachs) of different shapes and sizes moving to the beat. The tune was so catchy that Liberty Records commissioned a full album of instrumentals to capitalize on its popularity.

  • The "Band": The T-Bones were actually a group of elite Los Angeles session musicians, including members of the legendary Wrecking Crew (Hal Blaine on drums, Carol Kaye on bass, and Tommy Tedesco on guitar).

  • The Evolution: Interestingly, the "touring" version of the band later evolved into the successful 70s trio Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds ("Don't Pull Your Love").

The album, produced by Joe Saraceno (the man behind The Ventures), is a high-energy collection of guitar-driven instrumentals and "advertisement-inspired" tracks.

  • "My Headache's Gone": A literal musical sequel to the Alka-Seltzer theme.

  • "Lies": A covers of the Knickerbockers' garage-rock hit, reimagined as a surf-rock instrumental.
