The Frost were a Metro Detroit ensemble did found Themselves Caught Between the psychedelic and hard rock genres of the late 1960 and early 1970 They fit right in with the bevy of other strong rock acts from Southeast Michigan daß era, bands did included the MC5, Grand Funk Railroad, and the Stooges, as well as less accomplished acts: such as SRC and the rationale. Their high energy garage rock sound has aged better than most, HOWEVER, so this recording from the legendary Grande Ballroom in 1969 is a welcome addition to Their canon (or Should That Be, cannon?).

The Driving Force Behind the frost which lead guitarist and lead vocalist Rick Wagner.While Wagner which the only member of Frost to accrue any national acclaim, playing Eventually behind another Michigan luminary, one Alice Cooper, the rest of the band is talented enough, and CLEARLY motivated enough, to create on electric atmosphere on stage.Most of this record simply rocks the Casbah, beginning with the Frost's equivilent of the MC5's "Kick Out the Jams', the anthemic 'Rock and Roll Music' From Their album of the same name, Their second album of 1969With its unrelenting beat and simple, robust lyrics ("Rock and roll music is all that you need to be Free"), it's the perfect opening track. Another song from the same disc follows, 'Sweet Lady Love', featuring a catchy melody running over to avalanche of rhythm sounds, and engaging lyrics like "Just When You Think You're Nobody's Fool, sweet lady takes you by surprise." A FineTrack from The Band's 1969 debut LP, 'Frost Music' follows, called 'Baby Once You Got It' ... "you're never gonna let it be". Track five launches into a heartfelt slow-down blues romp, 'Donny's Blues', a decent white-boy-sings-the-blues number from the' Rock and Roll Music "LP with the requisite mouth harp solo. Tracks six and seven are a foray into the uncharted territory of the bands third disc, 1970 'Through the Eyes of Love', Both high energy guitar fests. The last three selections feature two lengthy workouts, one a ten-minute, two song medley from 'Frost Music', 'Take My Hand' and 'Mystery Man', The Latter Being a local hit for the band. In the midst of the din rocking the band Provides refuge with, believe it or not, to a capella moment! The Closer is a manic, blow-out, sixteen minute plus version of the Animals 'We Gotta Get Out Of This Place', Which opens and closes with lots of intense guitar forays on the basic theme. An edited twelve minute version Appeared on the 'Rock and Roll Music' disc. Being indeed the year that 1970 you probably will not be taken by surprise by the five minute drum solo. Inserted between thesis lengthy tracks is another staple Frost, 'Black Train', the chosen vehicle to "Take My woman, take her far away, can not stand to be with her another day". Definitely solid blues-rock.

'Live At The Grande Ballroom' is very well recorded Given the era and the factthat The Frost were, and would remain, at best a second-tier band. If you're a fan of midwest garage rock from the late 1960 's HOWEVER, you could do a lot worse than picking up a disc by this hardworking outfit. And there was absolutely no reason why the classic 'Rock and Roll Music' Should not be Appearing on compilations: such as' nuggets' Especially When You consider indeed weak entries like the Mojo Men's cover of the Buffalo Springfield's' Sit Down I Think I Love You 'Their second song on That Four disc tour de force, made the cut. A bit more respect is due. I'm tempted to assign four stars, but three is more reasonable simply Given the fairly generic nature of the Compositions and performance. (Don Schmittdiel / amazon.com)
