I bought this LP new in March 1969.


Cover - Shrink on.  No writing.  No cover splits.  EJ Korvette’s D price stamp on rear, top right.  Very little shelving/handling evidence.  The Title, Label information printed on the spine is repeated on the top edge of the cover.


Vinyl - Some rubs.  Scratch looking line on Back Door Man, but I don’t hear any pops, so I consider it just a visible mark.  Plays with no problems.


Sleeve - Clear plastic.

I have to lean to wirz in their Howlin’ Wolf discography (type Howlin’ Wolf wirz in your search and click on the wirz entry) which has 1/1969 as the release date for this album.  rateyourmusic has this being released April 1969.  Since I bought this in March 1969, the April date won’t work.


I also believe this to be a first pressing.


The capital eye and the W4RS in the Runout indicate the RCA Indianapolis Plant pressed this.

While this is probably NOT the album to introduce Howlin’ Wolf to the Chicago-Electric-Postwar novice, it is Howlin’ Wolf with his trademark singing voice.

Hubert Sumlin is in here somewhere, mixing it up with The Rotary Connection.  Bring psychedelia into the barroom.  I like it.


Why not experiment?  Some of BB King’s early work has no horns, Muddy Waters recorded an album with horns, John Lee Hooker had an album rereleased with horns added.


Different presentations of Wolf songs that had been around for years are welcome.  Who knows, maybe this backing makes them more inviting to an audience unfamiliar with Wolf’s original work.  Couple of songs with spoken intros add to the fun.


For Howlin’ Wolf fans this is required listening.  And enjoyable.
