Wo-Fat rules, bar none and the Dallas, TX titans have returned with another album chock full of molasses thick riffs and grooves entitled Midnight Cometh. They are one of the bands who really don’t need to have a ton of lyrics in their songs and just let their playing deliver the message. Midnight Cometh will be the trio’s sixth overall release as well as their debut for new home base (Ripple Music) and carries on their style of Texas doom blues-based jam sessions that showcase both their musicianship qualities and sonic capabilities which have set them apart from the rest of the pack within the genre. To give them a press quote to use, if Hendrix and R.L. Burnside caroused with the likes of Electric Wizard and decided to record together…Wo Fat’s sound would most likely be end result of that collaboration. After producing a powerful swan song for their old home (Small Stone Recordings) with 2014’s The Conjuring, it was of curiosity on this guy’s part if such as album as The Conjuring could be topped (c’mon, the sequencing is pretty damn incredible and the monster track “Dreamwalker” is one of the best finale’s to an album). This guy was mistaken and for good measure.

The vision quest that Midnight Cometh’s five tracks will surely invoke starts off with the prophetic “There’s Something Sinister In The Wind” which immediately has guitarist/vocalist Kent Stump pick up alongside his mates Kono (bass) and Michael Walter (drums) in a fast paced first half and them mellow out the listener (or kick their ass in a berserker like frenzy) during the second half with an improv jam session that’s a hell of a lot better than anything Phish would ever put out if they decided to incorporate some Black Sabbath in their style. ( ) “Of Smoke And Fog” has Kent’s effects driven opening riff leading into Michael’s galloping drums slowly builds into a riff that grabs you by the balls instantly. Half way through Midnight Cometh, the album changes tempo and goes into a minor key with the aggressive and driving “Le Dilemme De Detenu”. The next track “Three Minutes To Midnight” makes a visual on the appearance on the LP artwork (cheers to David Paul Seymour for the badass illustration) and will surely be a crowd favorite to hear live with the amount of crunch that’s prevalent throughout its 6:20. Once again, no Wo Fat album would be complete without an epic finale and is delivered as the punishing track “Nightcomer” which features Kent’s slide work and the most crushing riff on the album occurring at the 2:25 mark.
