(EBONY EXPRESS .) by (EBONY EXPRESS )...... ....(A BAND MEMBER TALKS ABOUT THE BAND: The Ebony Express was formed in 1971. I [Rocky] was very young to be in that group being in my mid-teens. Personnel Ebony - Congas Bill Sagone - Sax - vocals Dale Carpenter - Guitar - vocals Duke Gore - Bass - vocals Rocky Gordon - Drums We performed for events at the Student Union ballroom at UNLV for concerts promoted by Dennis Turner, who went on to become successful in the music industry in artist management, most notably for Kenny G during all the money making years in the late '80s and '90s. Ebony gained notoriety as the conga player for Richie Havens at Woodstock. We were signed to Contempo Records, and distributed by United Artists. and recorded our album at Bill Porter's (Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, Chet Atkins, Al Hirt, Boots Randolph fame) recording studios here in Vegas, United Recording. We opened for bands like BB King, Sweetwater, George Carlin, and others that will come to me later. Most memorable accomplishment was being #1 fusion band on the charts in Denton, TX, per University Of North Texas State jazz students supporting the album . We also dominated in Dallas, Philadelphia, and Seattle, and Boston jazz stations with crossover listeners in top 40. The hit song was Prostitute.
