Detroit songwriter Ted Lucas is gathered here across a three-part retrospective that finally maps the strange, scattered path of his catalogue, from mid-60s band recordings through to a long-lost late-period set. Long treated as a peripheral figure, this collection makes a quieter argument for his place as a writer of unusual sensitivity. The early material, with the Spike Drivers and others, leans into a hazy, exploratory psych, songs stretching out with a loose, searching feel. By the early 70s cuts, the frame narrows. Acoustic guitars sit closer to the voice, melodies turning inward, as on 'It Is So Nice To Get Stoned' and 'Baby Where You Are'. The final section shifts again, smoother in tone, but still marked by the same careful phrasing that runs through it all.
