Label/Format: Decca, original unboxed mono with deep ring ridge, these have matt surfaces with a gentle trace of texturing.

Label Conditions: Both in supreme condition, very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces minuscule and faint, there is no wear around the hole area at all. Finding this 52-year-old mono record better will prove beyond difficult.

Brief Info: Born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie in 1948, everyone knows her as Lulu, this was her 1965 debut album, her only one for Decca Records. Her career started with the success of The Isley Brothers song ‘Shout’, that reached No 7 in the UK, then backed by her backing band The Luvvers, this was recorded when she was just 15. That is included along with three other singles, two of which also charted. By the time of the album’s release at age 17, Lulu had parted with The Luvvers, although they are seen on the back cover. More singles success followed, but her albums did not fare as well with no UK chart entries. So sales of this first album could be deemed disappointing and it marked the end of the brief stay with Decca. Now over 52-years-old, this vintage mono album is rarely seen in decent condition, often played heavily on the most basic of equipment, this copy more than bucks-the-trend. Sixteen superb full-on pop songs as only Lulu could perform them, this is a mini classic of its type. It appears hardly used and sounds fantastic, the cover also impressive with only scant clues of age. For fans of this ever-popular singer, a very impressive copy that could indeed prove a major upgrade for classic 1960s pop. Now that really could be something to really shout about.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a vintage flimsy thin card cover, typical for this label as this time. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on the back via the spine edge. This original includes two external flipbacks (top and bottom). The main back panel is matt and fairly smooth. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the original polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: What a fantastic picture of the 17-year-old singer, here seen to maximum advantage under shiny, fresh and clear Clarifoil laminate. This has not lifted and any creasing few and near the edges or corners, the main area of interest has little to fault at all. Unusually for a cover this tremendous age, it has minimal dulling, only traces around the rim and label areas under light, almost as light as it will ever get. Lulu’s portrait retaining vivid colour with no fading or ageing at all. What a wonderful front cover this is.

Cover Back: Vintage Decca covers with flipbacks are scarce, most are seen without them. Also hard to find them without often significant damage or wear. Both here are solid and very neat with little to fault, the odd small tip crease or two apart. Any grubbiness, darkening or creasing little and light, just enough to politely remind of its considerable age. A tiny red pen mark is seen near the top right corner below the LK 4719 catalogue number, but little else. The picture of Lulu with The Luvvers is pristine. So a lovely back to complement the highly impressive front.

Top Edge: Very thin indeed, but still reasonably straight, clean with any laminate chipping little, being white, this shows little.

Bottom Edge: Overall similar, even better if anything.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, and unusually sharp with very little wear or thickening, even as seen viewed end-on. The back edge less wide than the front in manufacture, so this naturally protected by it. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, only a little bowed towards the ends. Again very thin and laminate this age will pull and cause them to be less straight – arguably better than lifting – this only gentle anyway as seen in my picture. Minimal compression, the ends are pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this nicely centred on the narrow depth also as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, very fine to excellent shape retained with no major knocks, any tip creasing small and light from the odd gentle dink.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile mid-1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. With only polite and light clues of age, this beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: in terms of wear or ageing, better still. Just creasing and crinkle to the lower corners stops a higher grading. The white paper only gently darkened and both window circles pristine, the polylining still clear and fresh. No edge splits or repairs. This is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text, it has no reference to stereo records.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and as close to a Near Mint as I could put on a 52-year-old mono record, this is a fantastic example that will rarely surface better. A truly beautiful visual copy with labels to match, veruy clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed on the highest quality Decca vinyl. Any hint of dulling from the original polylining confined to the run out area of side one as seen under light, this only gentle and faint. Both playing areas probably come as close to reminding of as-issued as they will get these days. A copy appearing hardly even played with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers, this up there as one of the cleanest, least-used, oldest popular music records I have seen. One that is seen occasionally, but most are trashed and hardly worth a second look or listen. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors, indeed this could prove a near ultimate upgrade for Lulu fans and collectors of quality classic 1960s pop.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, barely anything even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo record player, I am certain this has barely been played at all and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Lulu’s full-on and sometimes intense vocals are perfectly crisp and sharp with no break-up or clarity loss. The ultimate test being the famous single ‘Shout’ that concludes side one, the inner most tracks always the most perilous on old mono records where tracking angle and misalignment is most critical. This plays superbly as the rest. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – this is rarely seen quite like this.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
