Rarity: Very rare: even standard ‘shop’ copies of this are elusive and seldom show up. One of the rarest on Polydor, this went largely ignored. Test Pressings go beyond rare, I doubt if many will even exist.

Brief Info: Luv Machine are an obscure rock band that originated in Barbados. They made this one-off album for Polydor. Due to lack of promotion it largely went unnoticed and lost of the mist of time. Indeed the band folded even before its release. The three West Indian members were joined by the English bass-player John Jeavons, the music they played was not typical of their roots. Instead they played hard rock with distinct progressive overtones. The opening song ‘Witches Wand’ was a single and has become a cult favourite with typical sound from the underground scene of the time. With so few sales of the album, this has become a highly collectable and sort-after set, it seldom surfaces and remains a classic one-off. This super-rare Test Pressing is in very respectable condition. It has some surface sound, this largely between songs and a few clicks on side two. The thin card cover aged and marked, but many Test Pressings do not even include covers, so this can be considered a bonus in that respect, this is a rare cover of course in its own right. So far from being perfect, it still has to be offered due to its genuine rarity, most of the songs play very well indeed, and side one especially is impressive, most of the clicks on side two towards the earlier part of the record. But not that many in context. Not for visual or sound purists, but for the rarest records that seldom surface, sometimes compromise has to be made – such a copy will rarely, if ever be seen or offered.

Cover Grade and Format: GOOD(++): a single format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front: Overall, the cover has aged, but remains fully intact with no tears or splits. The front is the better side of the two and is actually quite respectable. Grubby with a little staining near the bottom left and few only light creases. The actual graphic is impressive with little at all to fault, there is actually little rubbing to the surface which is a positive. Some burring to the right entrance edge.

Cover Back: Again grubby and moderate at least towards the left, also with a mark towards the top left. Like the front, the graphic and text parts are fully intact and strong. The arguably conservative grading is mostly for grubbiness.

Top Edge: Straight and unsplit with moderate grubbiness and rubbing.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge has thickened with some burring, the back edge is a little neater overall. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Fairly solid, straight with some compression. The surface has rubbed and toned/stained with most of the text eroded.

Corners: Moderate rubbing with some tip creasing, good shape retained with no major knocks.

Cover Summary: I rarely offer covers of this lower grading as my regular customers will know. Also Test Pressings often do not include them, so this is almost a bonus item. Due to rarity no qualms in offering as long as correctly graded, and I am sure it can be argued this is better than Good(++) as it has no real ‘damage’ as such. A very respectable example for the right collector, but certainly not for the more discerning of course.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD / VERY GOOD(–): again a respectable copy of an immensely rare Test Pressing with ultimate first pressing criteria. In normal room light, this looks quite nice, with more scrutiny under my grading lamp, there are surface marks, and one or two penetrating scratches on side two, but reasonably small with only a few clicks. Being honest, a more typical Test Pressing, these are more often seen marked and this is. Again it has to be offered due to rarity and also as the majority of the album plays very well indeed. Not for the more discerning, but still a fine rarity that will seldom, if ever be offered as Test Pressing, or even as a standard issue.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: I am glad to state, this record plays somewhat above its visual grading with most of any surface sound between the songs. This is hardly loud and degrades the experience little. The music is mostly clean and sharp with great detail and clarity. Side one especially is impressive with little really unwanted. Side two has some clicks, mostly from one mark in particular, but they are quite brief and sporadic, again the majority plays very well. No tracking issues* and I enjoyed this record considerably, and as many will know, I am fussy. Easily of a standard to be offered, many vinyl collectors expect light blemishes or even the odd flaw. Being of such rarity, I have no qualms in offering this album and for sure it will please many collectors, but if a higher grading example is required, the wait continues. It is what it is – a Very Good example at best visually with most of the sound nearer and largely Excellent.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
