The Way out LP

Extremely rare LP from L.VOAG, member of the Uk art-punk / diy legends THE HOMOSEXUALS, released privately on his own!!! This copy is a beautiful one, each copy was handmade-totally DIY-, with poster booklet and special packaging!! Have a look for the Homosexuals(and related) discography here: http://members.aol.com/heartsinexile2/index.html . The band has retained a legendary status because of the scarcity of their recordings, nearly all made privately with really crazy homemade cover, some handpainted! Nurse with wound also refers to L.Voag and his craziness in the Nurse with wound list of influences, while some of the songs have an art-punk experimental craziness.

Here's a review from the 33Rebellionsperminute site:

"THE WAY OUT is a fairly quiet album anchored by thoroughly convincing, if simple, jazz bass and by quasi-jazz drums that are interesting because of miking oddities, weird artificial volume alterations, fake reverb or deadening applied for no more reason than "this sounds cool, eh?", cut'n'paste rhythm, and unusual choices in percussion: from snare to cymbal to tuned triangles to bicycle-bell to hospital beeping sounds to detuned banjo hits to pioneering equivalents of rap-music "scratching". Soft drones and tremoloes of many heretofore nonexistent types join in, and so does folky acoustic guitar. Altered vocal samples from unknown media are presented for sound rather than articulation (I especially like how "Franco's Prayer" alternates sung a capella, line by line, with what a swarm of insects would sound like if instead of buzzing they were arguing about sports at incomprehensible speed). But even at its most clamorous, say "Boxing And Sparring With The First Dimension" or whichever song has tuneful females singing "Hatred of all things fair! Destruction of nice hairdos!", every weird little element can be individually picked out, and plenty of songs allow tiny silences to crack their unpolished surfaces. Voag could quite possibly sing, but prefers to either squeak or intone like a Homer Simpson with less intellectual gravitas. It's entertaining that way, and this Mr. Science Blows Things Up Without Hurting Anybody approach to jazz does not require any previous appreciation for Miles Davis. Fortunately."

And another review from the internet: "Classic experimental/punk/wave DIY lp by probably the most notable of the homosexuals' many side projects, recorded in 1979 and released in 1980 (no label info whatsoever), L.VOAG. includes the great track 'kitchen', as recently covered by drew daniel (matmos)'s the soft pink truth, as well as the sublime minimal synth drone number 'bedroom'. this album also featured on that perennial barometer of record collector fetishism the 'nurse with wound list'".

The Homosexuals emerged from a peculiar corner of the British rock scene that had managed to give birth to various forms of punk (Magazine, Swell Maps) as well as late 70s art rock (Chris Cutler, Fred Frith, Robert Wyatt) and the power-pop explosion that would also later infect the USA.  The three members of the band -- Bruno, Anton (a/k/a George Harassment) and L'Voag -- met in 1978 at a communal squat somewhere in London. Voag apparently met Bruno by accident, during a skinhead rally, and began jamming with him --" mindless three-chord music," as he put it.  Eventually the band started recording under the wings of Chris Grey at Surrey Sound Studios. Grey's contributions towards the band's sound would eventually make him into something like an honorary member of the group, especially since his mother apparently footed the bill for many of the band's early 7" releases.  Almost all of the tracks recorded with Grey's input have an experimental flair to them which the band embraced readily. Voag eventually left to continue on his own in a highly experimental and personal vein, while the Homosexuals continued to record on-and-off on their own.  Many of them also did their own solo work -- Anton recorded a solo LP, Masai Sleepwalking (with input from the others), which is as outlandishly wonderful in a grungy basement-tapes way as anything the Homosexuals (or any of their sidebands) did. The band mated catchy songwriting and strong melodies with experimental and prog-rock flourishes -- gearshifting time signatures, song breaks that threatened to turn one song into another -- that managed to sound like they were natural outgrowths of the songs themselves rather than something grafted on gratuitously.  At worst, this came off as fractured and spastic, but at its best, in songs like "Walk Before Imitate" or "Divorce Proceedings from Reality," it was like a door being kicked down to a new kind of pop music that hasn't been explored in the same way since.  The band also blended in elements of the No-Wave scene like quasi-atonal funk bass, and even full-out reggae influences; there's even an homage to the German prog-rock monolith Faust in "Mad Bombers of Major Valour" (from the Vencer with Emos side project).
