Description
A remarkable survivor.
Dug this out while clearing out my music room, forgot I had it. Came from a house clearance auction lot years ago when we had a vintage furniture and homewares shop.. I also traded in vinyl and vintage hifi gear.
The original recording of probably the most performed opera and a great favourite of mine. From 1917 at La Scala with the orchestra under Carlo Sabajno. With Remo Andreini and Gemma Bosini as Rodolfo and Mimi, see photo for other details.
Disc serial numbers run from S 5056 to S 5078
The records themselves, although showing by the spindle marks to have been played, are in remarkable condition. Some, particularly the first few discs, will need a clean, but whatever is there appears superficial, but I’m no expert in antique shellac. I can only see one scratch, on side one of the first disk, see photo. Whoever played it must have used good needles.
In other words it looks to be eminently playable.
Unfortunately I can’t play it myself.
It’s also a very fine object in itself.
But a heavy one! In its cover and stitched paper sleeves, the weight is 6.4 kilograms
