Description
Full title is really “31 VII 69 10:26 - 10:49 PM / 23 VIII 64 2:50:45 - 3:11 AM The Volga Delta,” but this is usually known as “The Black Record” or “The Black Album.” The cover (by Marian Zazeela) is black gloss print on a black background, and is incredibly hard to photograph, but I tried. This is number 793 of a limited edition of 2,800 copies issued by the German “Edition X” label in 1969. It bears the artists’ signatures and the inscription “To Matt, with all good vibrations” and the date “93vii26” (July 26, 1993). La Monte and Marian gave it to me personally as a gift on that date, signing it at their Church Street loft in Manhattan. The LP has been played twice, and otherwise kept in its original heavy plastic sleeve, in the slipcase and an outer plastic dust sleeve.
The record is pristine. The cover has a few tiny marks that might not even be visible if it weren’t glossy black.Here are some notes from the back cover:
Side A: This work was recorded at the date and time indicated in the title, at Galerie Heiner Friedrich, München 31 VII 69 10:26-10:49 PM - is a section of the longer work: Map Of 49's Dream The Two Systems Of Eleven Sets Of Galactic Intervals Ornamental Lightyears Tracery. Play this side at 33 1/3 rpm only.
Side B: We recorded this gong duet in our studio in New York City on the date and time indicated in the title. It is a section of a larger work: Studies In The Bowed Disc begun in September 1968. To listen to the live performance, playback at 33 1/3 rpm. However, this side may be played back at any slower constant speed down to 8 1/3 rpm, i.e., 16 2/3 rpm which is available on some turntables.
I'll ship this in a box, with lots of protection. It's a piece of history.
