[Item Description]

Andrey Markovich Labinsky Russian tenor (1871-1941) as Faust. Labinsky was a pupil of Stanislaus I. Gabel and V. M. Samus in St. Petersburg. He was a member of the Mariinsky Opera choir before he had his first solo in 1897. At that same theater he sang the role of Vsevolod in the 1907 premiere of Rimsky-Korsakov's The Invisible City of Kitezh. In 1912 he joined the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where he remained a leading tenor until 1924. Upon his retirement from singing he became a professor at the Moscow Conservatory. He was regarded as a good tenor but not in the same class as Sobinov or Smirnov.
