Description

Langston Hughes, Jobe Huntley, Porter Singers, Ernest Cook
Tambourines to Glory

Label: Folkways FG 3538 (Vinyl record album)

Condition: Sleeve VG bottom edge split 50% along bottom edge, piece of tape on cover / Vinyl A:VG-/B:VG+, cleaned with VPI machine, with original booklet

Inscription: "Especially for the Tanens -- with happy memories of your home in Dakar--sincerely-- Langston Hughes, Dakar, April 1966" (also says "Festival Time")

Ted Tanen was a U.S. Foreign Service Officer who facilitated the appearance of Duke Ellington, Katherine Dunham and Langston Hughes at the World Festival of Arts in Dakar, Senegal in April 1966. Hughes's inscription appears to be a nice gesture to the Tanen family as thanks.  Hughes died in 1967.  There are copies of the Tambourines book that are inscribed, but I've never seen the LP autographed in this way.

This record comes from a great collection of about 100 LPs I acquired from an older Jamaican gentleman in Brooklyn recently. The records were stored in a room with about 2 square feet of walkable space-- the place was packed with his sound system and records! He had a remarkably diverse group of records, spanning everything from the expected reggae to Jewish folk records, 60's psych and even some 80's indie.  Be sure to check my other listings for more records on sale from this one-of-a-kind collection this week!

About me: I'm a longtime 60's rock/R'n'B DJ and collector. I've been eBaying since 1999, but in 2016 I turned my hobby of buying record collections into a business! I love records THAT much. I grade my records based on how I would BUY them, not how I want to sell them.

Payment:
PayPal. Required within 7 days of auction close or your order is cancelled and I will relist the item.

GRADING (Done visually, based on Goldmine)

Near Mint (NM or M-)
The record should show no obvious signs of wear and will be glossy/shiny. A sleeve should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling. No cracks, scratches or warps.

Excellent (EX or VG++)
One or two light marks visible on the disc at most, otherwise full gloss. No cracks, scratches or warps. Sleeve shows 1-2 marks, nothing too major, maybe at the edges.

Very Good Plus (VG+)
A Very Good Plus record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled.

Record surfaces may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences. Maybe also slight warps that do not affect the sound.

Sleeves will have some slight wear, lightly bent corners, or a slight seam split.

Very Good (VG)
Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during the intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound.

Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers.

Good (G), Good Plus (G+)
A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise, scratches and groove wear. Tape, writing, seam splits, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object.

What's Included With Your Record Purchase
Please read my description thoroughly. The only items included with your purchase are the ones described in the listing. If something is not mentioned in the description, it is probably not included with the item (for example, original inner sleeves, inserts, posters, etc). If you're not sure, send me a message.
I ship all records in new, sturdy mailers with cardboard filler pads. I separate the discs from the sleeves to avoid damage during shipping. I pack the covers in new thin plastic sleeves and the discs in new white paper sleeves
