A seriously collectable pressing of this debut single from Sydney-based punk band The Last Words played and recorded in Sydney and London from 1977 to 1980. The band's founder members, UK migrants Malcolm Baxter (vocals) and Andy Groome (guitar) grew up in Liverpool on the outskirts of western Sydney ; the other two local members were Leigh Kendall (bass) and John Gunn (drums).
The Last Words were certainly less well known than The Saints, but just as important in the ‘Punk Jigsaw’, especially by using Adrian ‘dub’ Sherwood (UK) to produce their self titled debut album, released at the end of 1980 though it did not include ‘Animal World’.
The A-side (backed with 'Wondering Why') was originally released in 1977 on the bands own Remand label (Sydney) and was one of the first ever very first DIY punk singles. Consequently it now fetches many hundreds of $ these days if and when one turns up.
Animal World developed a bit of a cult following leading to it, in 1978, being the first punk single to be released here in Oz on a major label (Wizard), by an unknown band that had never played live. Only 1000 copies were pressed (all on blue vinyl) and featuring a different B-side in ‘Every Schoolboy's Dream’.
A 3rd pressing appeared in the UK in 1979 on the Rough Trade label with "No Music" on the flip side and with a picture sleeve cover, and again a much sought after item.
This buzz-saw slice of punk rock a la ‘Sex Pistols’ can be viewed on youtube where it was recorded at the Electric Ballroom in the late 70’s … awesome stuff!!
CONDITION :
Vinyl VG on looks but plays VG+. Plenty of light marks though plays along with no pops or skips. A great punk sound and find another if you can.
Labels : Clean.
Sleeve : original Wizard sleeve in A1 condition.
