Description
This listing is for one of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time, Led Zeppelin II. This one is very special, as it was the early pressing that was mastered by Robert Ludwig (RL). These albums were quickly taken out of circulation because the turntables of the day could not handle the powerful mastering. These early RL masterings are treasured by audiophiles as well as Zeppelin collectors.
There are a number of variations amongst the dead wax and pressing plants for this mastering. This one has the following:
- RL is present on both sides.
- SS is present on Side 1 only.
- The dead wax on Side 2 is narrow.
- The vinyl pressing plant was Presswell, as indicated by PR. While everyone raves about Monarch (MO) pressings, the vinyl from Presswell has been often thought to be very quiet amongst the audiophile crowd.
- The vinyl visually grades as Very Good Minus (VG-). It has numerous marks/scratches. On the positive side, the labels look fairly nice.
- I listened to this record all the way through twice. It does have some surface noise, mostly in the quiet passages, but it is not overpowering. There are a few pops/ticks present, but nothing really skipped. If I was to assign a play grade, I would say this sounded closer to a VG record than one that is VG-.
- The cover grades as Good Plus (G+). It has wear along with a long split on the bottom along almost the entire side that holds the record. Some exposure to moisture has cause light staining and some creasing/waviness at the bottom edge. The spine is solid.
- The inner sleeve is present and appears to be original. It also has been affected by moisture at the bottom, but it is intact and mostly free of splits.
In summary, the record in this auction is an affordable option for someone who would like to hear the Ludwig mastering of this Zep classic without breaking the bank.
