ALBUM -

The last ever studio album of Led Zeppelin before the tragic death of John Bonham, IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR sold in massive quantities throughout the world and came in many editions, pressings and variations. Millions were produced and sold internationally in various forms. A truly great album, the late mastreopive of a band experminating and taking new dircetiosn and influences, innovative and challenging as always

Because of the number of components involved in each copy, including the outer bag, outer cover, transforming inner sleeve and adjusted press vinyls, along with their frailty and vulnerability to change and damage, a complete first press UK set of ‘In Through’ has become a collectors pinnacle. The outer brown bag being made of flimsy paper and the inner being highly sensitive to reaction with any moisture, it is surprisingly difficult to find just one example in excellent or better condition, let alone a complete set of all six.

The brown bags made out of wrapping paper style paper, are usually torn, damaged, heavily stained, with seam splits and sticker marks. The white inners with black image were designed to ‘colour wash’, and usually were coloured in by enthusiastic fans.

Each album cover came with a slightly different design, al showing a scene in the same bar, but from different angles and with different characters occupying the situation. Because the outer sleeves came in brown bags it was impossible to know which variant of sleeve you were getting, and the numbers of sleeves produced became less and less as the letter types increased. ‘A’ sleeves are most commonly available, where as the E and F variary rarely come on the market.

The first press covers were made in card that was much thicker than all the later pressings, and thicker than card that is normally used for album covers. I don’t know of any album that compares. Also, the inner sleeves on first UK pressing were matt finish and slightly textured, with later versions losing the texture and then being produced in a slightly shiny finish. First press covers are also slightly larger than later pressings, being 313 mm along the spine, with later pressings being reduced to 309 mm. Its quite a noticeable difference when standing a number of different pressings together, and as unscrupulous dealers would often mix and match the covers / inners etc. you could get early pressings with the wrong covers. Not here! With so many variables, you can imagine how hard it is to get a complete original set, all with the correct covers, the correct textured inners, the correct brown bags and the correct vinlys. All componets are correct, 1st press UK originals, Guaranteed!

Many of the vinyls were produced in Germany and other countries, and it was only the first UK pressings that would have the original and corrected A5 B4 matrix numbers.

Vinyl ‘run off’ matrices side 2: SSK 89400 B4, corrected to B5. On all of these first pressings, the 4 of the B4 has been crossed out, and a number 5 has been stamped next to it on the vinyl run out. THIS CAN ONLY BE FOUND ON FIRST EVER UK PRESSINGS

The matrices are hand etched and are the same for all six vinyl’s, with the pressing code ‘STRAWBERRY’ being machine imprinted on all six vinyl’s in the run off on both sides.

Having a complete set is a major achievemnt. Even collating, testing, grading and listing this set is a major piece of work. I have gone out of my way to be as thorough and accurate as possible, pointing out any flaws even though they are tiny. I have studied and graded every component, and have aimed to give accurate and concise descriptons below.

VINYL CONDITION -

A stunning set of glossy Nr MINT vinyls. On first inspection they look largely unmarked, and in the case of vinyl E, totally unplayed. There are a couple of the faintest handing marks, and I would say that most of these vinyl’s have only been played a hand full of times. Really wonderful examples

All six vinyl’s are in Nr MINT condition. They do have some superficial surface hairlines and small handling marks caused by the thick inners and taking the vinyl in and out of the covers. None have deep scratches or marks or any particularly noticeable defects at all. And none have marks that cause any serious degrading of the audio quality

LABELS -

Stunning. Every single record label, that’s all twelve of them are in stunning Nr MINT condition. Many are unmarked. I can see the faintest spindle traces on three of the twelve labels only, and in each case there are only one or two near imperceptible lines. I never normally use the term Mint, as it should denote a new unplayed record. On saying that, these labels are as Nr MINT as you can get.

BROWN OUTER BAGS -

On all copies of IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR it is the Brown bags that are hardest to find in great condition. They are usually stained and torn with sticker residue, handling marks, unwanted writing and pieces missing. Not these ones. This set is complete. That means that all six bags are whole with no pieces missing. None of them have any writing on them, no names, no splashes of paint or ink, and no stains. They do of course have some light handling wear and a couple of small tears only. A great set all round

‘A’ Brown Bag – EXCELLENT – No tears, no marks, no stains, minimal short light creases. All opening edge serrations are complete and un torn, although do show a little general wear. Some light wear on the bottom corner

‘B’ Brown Bag – EXCELLENT – No tears, no marks, no stains, minimal short light creases. All opening edge serrations are complete and UN torn, although do show a little general wear. Some light wear on the bottom edge. Short splits on the opening side edge seems, about 2cm, almost un detectable

‘C’ Brown Bag – NEAR MINT - A wonderful example .

‘D’ Brown Bag – NEAR EXCELLENT – No tears, no marks, no stains, minimal short light creases. Some rubbing and wear along the edges all opening edge serrations are complete and un torn, although do show a little general wear. Some light wear on the bottom edge. Short splits on the opening side edge seems, about 2cm, almost un detectable.

‘E’ Brown Bag - NEAR MINT – lovely crisp paper. No tears, no marks, no stains, no creasing. All opening edge serrations are complete and un torn, although do show minimal wear.

‘F’ Brown Bag - EXCELLENT PLUS – A crisp sharp example, with minimal wear. No tears, no marks, no stains, minimal light creases. All opening edge serrations are complete, just slight wear at the opening edge.

COVERS -

Great covers too. The opening edges of these thick first press covers were not particularly prone to fraying, but did often get bashed and dented, and could get some feathering at the openings. Not these ones, all of which are very square, totally un frayed and without dents. Surprisingly the back covers were often prone to ring wear, but these are all nice and clean, without ring wear. The Spines shows minimal wear only, with the spine text being totally intact, with only light creases.

Cover ‘A’ – NEAR MINT – just a very few short light surface creases towards the top. The spine is very square and the spine text is totally intact.

Cover ‘B’ – EXCELLENT – the only apparent flaw on this is a light crease across the lower corner of the back and some very light wear at the top rear, virtually undetectable. The spine is very square and the spine text is totally intact.

Cover ‘C’ – NEAR MINT – Some light crease only on the rear by the spine. The spine is very square and the spine text is totally intact.

Cover ‘D’ – EXCELLENT – free of rips of tears, this cover does have some creasing and light bruising to the corners. The spine is slightly miss aligned but the spine is very square and the spine text is totally intact.

Cover ‘E’ – NEAR MINT – A couple of small very light creases only. Almost un detectable

Cover ‘F’ – EXCELLENT – A couple of small very light creases. The spine is very square and the spine text is totally intact, but there is a slight rub line through the word, ‘Through’.

Spines: The Spines play an important role in determining the quality of a record cover. All six spines are in physically near perfect shape with strong square shoulders, sharp corners and edges, clean, clear and fully readable and range in grade from NEAR EXCELLENT TO NEAR MINT, generally following the individual cover grades.

INNER SLEEVES -

THE INNER SLEEVE - EXCELLENT to Nr MINT

The inner sleeve of IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR has a black outline print on an almost pure white thick base paper. It is water reactive and highly absorbent of moisture. Perspiration from your fingers during handling, or exposure in a moist atmosphere, can set it off the coloured 'magic' design hidden underneath. These sensitive inners are nearly always marked to some extent, or completely coloured in as eager owners want to see the transformation taking place. It is very hard to find any copy with an unmarked inner. These six copies are largely unmarked with undamaged corners and uncoloured prints. An amazing collection.

Colour Wash Magic Inner Sleeves: No seam splits, no separations, no splits, no tears, no damage on any of them. I will grade them according to any discolouration or the slightest of colour reaction. This is all very minor and illustrated by the individual grades:

‘A’ Inner – NEAR MINT – A wonderful example. No colour reaction what so ever. Just some light evidence of evidence of handling on the top or the sleeve.

‘B’ Inner – EXCELLENT – No colour reaction what so ever. Just some light evidence of evidence of handling and some yellowing. Some slight bruising to the top right hand corner, but it is slight

‘C’ Inner - NEAR MINT – Just the slightest evidence of handling, very very minor colour reaction, almost un detectable. I slight green tinge on the ashtray above the cigar.

‘D’ Inner – EXCELLENT – Just the slightest evidence of handling and very minor colour reaction. Some very faint green on the ashtray, and A spot of light red on the lighter

‘E’ Inner – NEAR MINT – Wonderful example. No colour reaction what so ever. Just some light evidence of evidence of handling on the top or the sleeve.

‘F’ Inner – NEAR MINT – Wonderful example. No colour reaction what so ever. Just some very light evidence of evidence of handling

Vinyl Warping - for some reason, IN THROUGH seemed a bit prone to warping. Even the slightly thicker first pressings can bow in the middle, and I have seen many that have. I can firmly state that NONE of the first press UK vinyl’s have any warping at all, all lying completely flat on the turn table. Even when inspected along the edge, each one of the six in completely true

IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR in this type of condition is very, very rare. Like all zep albums, the vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound. Any examples with vinly in this type of condition, that plays practically perfectly, is very scarce indeed. The covers are almost impossible to find without wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce and these ones are some of the best examples I have seen. Finding a complete undamaged set of IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR, with stunning, first press UK Nr MINT vinyl’s is virtually un heard of.!.

MINT: Virtually unplayed. The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. Cover is pristine.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

V.G PLUS: The record will still be nice and shiny, but may have a few light marks, and will play well. Slight wear and tear on the cover.

V.G: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items.
