THE ALBUM 

The last ever studio album of Led Zeppelin before the tragic death of John Bonham, IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR sold in massive quantities throughout the world and came in many editions, pressings and variations. Millions were produced and sold internationally in various forms. A truly great album, the late masterpiece of a band experimenting and taking new directions and influences, innovative and challenging as always

Because of the number of components involved in each copy, including the delicate outer bags, the outer cover, the transforming inner sleeve and adjusted first press vinyls, along with their frailty and vulnerability to change and damage, a complete first press UK set of ‘In Through’ has become a collecting pinnacle. The outer  brown bag being made of flimsy paper and the inner sleeve is highly sensitive to reaction with any moisture, it is surprisingly difficult to find just one example in excellent or better condition, let alone a complete set of all six.

The brown bags made out of wrapping paper style paper, are usually torn, damaged, heavily stained, with seam splits and sticker marks. The white inners with black image were designed to ‘colour wash’, and usually were coloured in by enthusiastic fans.

Each album cover came with a slightly different design, all showing a scene in the same bar, but from different angles and with different characters occupying the situation. Because the outer sleeves came in brown bags it was impossible to know which variant of sleeve you were getting, and the numbers of sleeves produced became less and less as the letter types increased. 

The first press covers were made in card that was much thicker than all the later pressings, and far thicker than card that is normally used for album covers. I don’t know of any album that compares. Also, the inner sleeves on first UK pressing were matt finish and slightly textured, with later versions losing the texture and then being produced in a slightly shiny finish. First press covers are also slightly larger than later pressings, being 313 mm along the spine, with later pressings being reduced to  309 mm. This cover is the full size 313 mm.

Its quite a noticeable difference when standing a number of different pressings together, the only way you can tell if they are indeed FIRST UK PRESSINGS. Unscrupulous dealers would often mix and match the covers / inners etc. so you could get early pressings with the wrong covers.

Not here! With so many variables, you can imagine how hard it is to get a complete original set, all with the correct covers, the correct textured inners,  the correct brown bags and the correct vinyls. All components are correct UK originals, Guaranteed!

ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:

Yes – brilliant sound quality throughout. All audio has been thoroughly tested. This stunning vinyl has fantastic audio precision. Clear and crisp. 

Please Note: This vinyl is UNPLAYED and has been carefully tested it to ensure the sound quality, as new vinyls can still have audio flaws or poor audio quality. 

Unplayed vinyl does not necessarily equate with perfect audio. Even new unplayed pieces can have defects in the pressing and any vinyl that has been in storage for 40 years can have dust penetration or even distortion to the grooves that can cause deterioration to the general sound quality, or heavy pops and clicks. This record has been carefully play tested to give an accurate assessment of its audio performance. 

I am pleased to say that this rare pressing plays through with great, extremely bright un disturbed audio. It really is a tremendous example, the channels are clean and unstressed and there is not a hint of distortion anywhere on the record. I will give a detailed account below:

In Through The Out Door is a vinyl notoriously hard to find with even half decent Audio. I have collected numerous pressings, and so often they have blurry sound, pops and clicks, even when there are no visible marks on the vinyl. Finding complete pieces with TOP Audio is a needle in haystack problem. I am glad to say this pressing plays with Top Audio with NO loud clicks or pops and certainly no distortion what so ever. This great record plays up to its high visual grading and beyond. Strong, undistorted sound free of loud pops or clicks. The channels are clean and unstressed.  The record plays with staggering power, with a minimum of surface sound during the tracks. Fantastic, Top quality vibrant sound throughout. 

As well as looking great this stunning vinyl gives outstanding audio performance. Fantastic power, clarity and sharpness, combining the rich warm sound of these first pressing UK vinyl’s with precise audio instrumentation. The vocals and keyboards ring out, as do the drums and various guitar sounds. The vinyl delivers full top quality sound throughout!

The album starts incredibly clear music, with so many sounds and layering that is usually inaudible. 'In the Evening' is a real test for the record. Its nearly always plagued by heavy static loud pops and clicks, but here it plays beautifully, with very little static or noticeable surface sound. The track bursts in with amazing power and clarity, a complex track with extremely complex audio layering, all bright and clear. There is some light static at the start and a couple of light tics, but they are light. A wonderful 'South Bound Saurez' sounds unplayed, with great clear audio. There is very little light static during the quieter sections, or anywhere else on this great track. Super clear bright audio with great separation. Still no loads pops, clicks or even a hint or distortion or surface sound. 'Fool in the Rain' plays brilliantly, with virtually NO background static at all, and certainly no loud pops or clicks. There is a bit of light static and a few static tics between tracks but that it . Finishing off side one with 'Hot Dog', incredible clear bright sound. There is a dust pop in the run out grooves after the music has completely stopped, and thats the only one Ive heard. Amazing audio, the whole album just plays superbly with not a hint of distortion or obvious surface sound anywhere, just great clear audio. 

'Carouselamra' brings in side 2. again with super clear audio. No loud pops or clicks, absolutely minimal static. 'All My Love' again just plays brilliantly. Every note is sharp and bright. Bright clear audio, no loud pops or clicks, a couple of static tics only and barely any static or surface sound during the track. The last track 'I'm Gonna Crawl' rounds off the album with the same high standard. Amazing sound throughout.

I really enjoyed every second of this rare ULTRA RARE pressing of this classic Zeppelin vinyl. There are NO repeat tics, NO distortion, NO loud pops or clicks, and of course NO sticks or jumps what so ever. This pressing plays with crisp crystal clear audio throughout, with no loss of audio performance what so ever. A great audio experience. 

This is a great listening pleasure and I would easily give this a grading of NEAR MINT condition. 

THE RECORD 

A brilliant clean bright vinyl. Visually stunning, this is a superb piece of glossy vinyl, and a really thick pressing. Deep clear grooves, this vinyl is gleaming. The record has an amazing shine, with NO scratches, NO obvious hairlines. Inspected under a spot light there are some light paper removal marks caused by the thick textured inner sleeve. This is a stunning example.

I would easily give this a grading of NEAR MINT condition. 

THE LABELS 

Great condition, the labels are unmarked, obviously with NO spindle traces. Great all round examples. A stunning set.

VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:

Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.

THE COVER 

IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR came with six different cover designs, each with an identity letter on the top of the spine. The 1st press covers were slightly larger than all other pressings , including the A5 B7 second press, and made with thicker card, These covers are highly prone to creasing due to their construction. 

The opening edges of this thick 1st press cover were not particularly prone to fraying, but did often get bashed and dented, and could get some feathering at the openings. Not this one, which is very square, totally un frayed and without dents.  Surprisingly the back covers were often prone to ring wear, but this one is nice and clean, without ANY ring wear. The Spine shows no wear, with the spine text being totally intact. This is one of the squarest examples I have ever seen!

THE SPINE 

The Spines play an important role in determining the quality of a record cover and the In Through The Out Door spines are very prone to flattening and creasing. This spines is in physically near perfect shape with strong square shoulders, sharp corners and edges, clean, clear and fully readable.

A great example. 

I would have to give this a grading of EXCELLENT PLUS to NEAR MINT condition. 

BROWN OUTER BAG 

On all copies of  IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR it is the Brown bags that are hardest to find in great condition. Being made of thin paper, they are usually stained and torn with sticker residue, handling marks, unwanted writing and pieces missing. Not this one. This set is complete and the thin paper bag is in stunning condition, with no pieces missing and no marks at all. NO writing on them, no names, no splashes of paint or ink, no tears and no stains.  

No marks, no stains, minimal creasing and just one tiny tear at the opening. All opening edge serration's are complete with no wear. A great example.

Graded at EXCELLENT PLUS condition. 

THE INNER  

The inner sleeve of IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR has a black outline print on an almost pure white thick base paper. It is water reactive and highly absorbent of moisture. Perspiration from your fingers during handling, or exposure in a moist atmosphere, can set it off the coloured 'magic' design hidden underneath.  These sensitive inners are nearly always marked to some extent, or completely coloured in as eager owners want to see the transformation taking place. It is near impossible to find any copy with an unmarked inner. This is a great example, unmarked with undamaged corners and uncoloured prints. 

Colour Wash Magic Inner Sleeve: No seam splits, no separations, no splits, no tears, no damage, a few very light handling marks only. Incredible!

A stunning example. Graded at NEAR MINT condition. 

RARITY

Finding an original UK press of  IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR in this type of condition is UNIQUE. Like all zep albums, the vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound. Any examples with a record in this type of condition, that plays practically perfectly, is extremely scarce indeed. The cover, is almost impossible to find without heavy creasing and wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce and this one is one is a great examples. Finding a great cover like this, with the original  great brown paper bag, un coloured magic inner sleeve and Unplayed piece of vinyl, makes this an incredible rarity and stunning set.

MINT: Virtually unplayed. The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. Cover is pristine.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

V.G PLUS: The record will still be nice and shiny, but may have a few light marks, and will play well. Slight wear and tear on the cover.

V.G: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, etc.
