Description

An original 1st press of Zep IV on the UK Atlantic label from 1971. Matrix A3/B4. Ok, and here's where it gets interesting.... the very 1st Zep IV labels went out the door with a number of attributes that were discontinued very quickly at 1st release. I'll list them..true 1st press copies should mention 'Peter Grant' at the foot of the label along side Jimmy Page. Publishing credits are only mentioned as 'Kinney' - just a week later they would include 'Superhype'. Then there's the positioning of 'Led Zeppelin' - nearly all original copies have this positioned in the red sector, whereas the very initial first design it shows within the plum sector. So, there you have it... one of the first copies to exist, and 'yes' there's an inverted feather miss-print which would have come one iteration before this design...but this is about as early as it's humanly/realistically possible to find. The heavy-set vinyl comes housed in an original gatefold cover. Also included is an original grey textured inner sleeve with exposed flipbacks and FOUR credits - please note the very 1st issue inner sleeve only had FOUR credits. So, 100% genuine and 100% complete.
Vinyl (Ex/Ex+) Wow, just finding a red & plum copy looking this good is really neat, but on an early sought after label...this really is top-draw stuff. Under close inspection I could only make out a couple of light marks per side - nothing remotely troublesome. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT+ level of playback. Quite frankly this is most certainly the best rendition of Zep IV I've ever witnessed. Even through the low-key super popular tracks on side 1 there's just clean audio. Intros and inbetweens are silent and the audio comes across with perfect clarity. Even in Stairway which is acoustic and, often, played to death...I'm hearing a silent background. This really is quite unusual on any red & plum copy let alone on the 1st label version. I will do my usual catch-all....expect a few crackles in a couple of isolated spots. E.g. in the intro to California..just the slightest static briefly. And then one click in the 'Battle of Evermore'. But it's certainly a top-draw rendition and one you'd really struggle to even equal.
Cover (Vg+) What I like about this cover is that the surface looks clean and feels clean. There's very little sign of surface wear that you often find on these early copies. Please note that on the front, over toward the opening, there's a small nick/tear in the surface [about 1.5 cm long and 0.5m tall]. You should be able to make it out in the close-up shot using the zoom facility. It's very minor and, to be honest, against the way the front cover is made up - very insignificant. The rear looks great too with no creasing or surface wear. But please note there is tape residue along the opening edge. On the upside this has helped to preserve the openings which remain reasonably sharp. The interior looks great no issues at all really. Edge wear is very light for this title. I'm used to finding it on most edges to quite a degree with this title. But someone's really looked after this copy there's only a tiny amount in one or two isolated spots. The spine is pretty much totally intact and unworn - this, again, is very unusual. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity and remains a very fine specimen indeed.
Inner (Vg) Surfaces look great and the flipbacks are secure. Bottom edge is pretty much entirely split.
