Well...you don't see one of these every day of the week!..
1st Label design...Never had one before...
But if that weren't enough...it is most likely the best Zep IV player I've ever witnessed. Admittedly a once in a life time purchase - perhaps. But hey if you were gonna push the boat out....lets face it...it's probably going to be on something a bit special...like an early Zep IV.
If one were not so keen on time travel, and going back to late summer 1971, and wanted a direct feed - a plugin into the main desk where Zep were recording...this would be the way to do it! It literally is so good - it sounds like you are actually there. And I've certainly had my fair share of excellent R&P copies - but this one manages an almost holographic performance. Plants vocal seems perfectly resolved and along with Sandy...quite otherworldly. PLEASE READ FULLY!!!!
An original 1st press from DAY 1 October 1971. Matrix A3/B4 [A3/B3] was also available at the same time. This is the very 1st red and plum label version. Let me qualify this statement....very early red & plum Zep IV's are quite easy to spot. They must have the Peter Grant credit in the plum sector along with the band title. Jimmy got his way as the 1st copies rolled off the press. He did not want GRANT showing as EXEC Producer. They had already pressed copies and rather than scrap any - it was decided corrective stickers would be added to the 1st copies that had not already escaped! The stickers, primarily, would redact the name Peter Grant, but also move the band title up into the red sector. Where it would remain for all future pressings. I have taken photos so you can clearly see these are still present and can be seen through [underneath] the stickers! And here's the thing that marks this copy out as a DAY 1 copy....on side 2 there's an inverted feather icon. Now, this is the final identifier which guarantees you are dealing with the VERY 1st possible label design. As to which is rarer a 1st label stickered or unstickered...I don't care too much either way...but my professional opinion is that a stickered DAY 1 version is possibly THE rarest label variation of all on Zep IV.  Please note that Misty Mountain Hop is spelt correctly - as they managed to do on 1st copies. Only making the error [to TOP] as the pressing runs progressed.. The vinyl comes housed in an original gatefold cover. Original most likely to 1972. ***** This cover is almost certainly not from 1971*****. A buyer may already have one knocking around or can fairly easily [and cheaply] pick up a genuine 1971. There would be no rush - particularly as aesthetically there's little visual difference. The inner lyric sleeve, again, is not original to '71. Fine for now - easy to pick up a genuine '71 in due course....particularly as early inner design was still used into Q1 1972. So, it's mainly all about the vinyl. Like I said - a once in a life-time-copy. And you will be smug as hell when you have it in YOUR collection.
Vinyl (Ex+) In lovely condition and has only seen lightest use. Super lustre - and waste wax showing. Under close inspection I could only make out a couple of slightest marks per side - nothing remotely troublesome. Fully tested from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT+ level of playback with a couple of slight deviations. Clean intros and inbetweens super clarity. You're as close as you could ever get to those original masters in reality - some great audio. Excellent energy, but incredible finesse in those quieter moments. Yes, you can find red & plum Zep IV's...but in my experience...it's the perfectly clean player through those popular acoustic numbers - that's the difficult thing to do. Clean slow builds....excellent clarity into the mix. I mean it is literally acing it from the audio perspective. EVERMORE is otherworldly....practically holographic. A couple of ticks in the openings seconds that is all. California is mega fussy...and this copy is just totally clean...TOTALLY! Can you hear Plant exhale before he starts..? - really low in mix...but on a clean copy you should be able to make it out. Stairway is almost impossible to find fully clean - particularly the really lowkey intro build. I would say this only time I've ever witnessed it and can come away saying that the rendition is to all intents and purposes - perfect. After a full test -  I would say you might just pick out one/single minor click per side. This in its own right is highly unusual. Needles to say the up tempo bangers are unbelievable. Outlandishly good. Ok - it's a 1st label version and highly collectible in its own right. But a Red & Plum copy, like this, that is this well preserved, is as rare as hens teeth in its own right. You cannot go any better...it is the final point on the curve. It just doesn't go any better. FINAL UPGRADE. 99.8% amazing..
Cover (Ex-) Very clean front with minimal sign of the dreaded ageing process. Surfaces are pretty much unworn. Slightest edge wear in the odd spot. Lovely solid rigid cover and opening panel. Sharp openings. Interior looks superb - and the spine pretty much fully intact.
Inner (Vg+) Really Clean surfaces. No spitting.
