Lee Morgan “Indeed” Blue Note 1538.
This is the Van Gelder-etched (“RVG”), deep-groove, flat-rim mono pressing of Lee Morgan’s “Indeed” (aka “Presenting”) on the Blue Note Records 767 Lexington Ave NYC labels of Blue Note 1538. “Ear” or “P” present in deadwax.
Get a taste of that original Blue Note first pressing magic. No reissue will ever sound as good.
Under direct light, this heavy vinyl has non-feelable hairline marks on both vinyl sides. Playing surface on both sides exhibit wear and play with low-level surface noise, mostly well under the instruments. Some tracks, like the end of side 1, play dead quiet. There is the occasional pop and tick, but as with all Lexington to New York USA Blue Note pressings, the music is so dynamic, punchy and full of tone, its enjoyment well exceeds any surface noise. There is occasional tizz or minor distortion on a handful of piano and trumpet notes; some tizz is simply a very hot trumpet signal. SIDE 1: Two feelable marks that are audible. Low-level surface noise beneath the instruments (less evident on my floorstanding DeVore Fidelity O93s than the bookshelf Quad S2s). Track 3, repeating, six ticks at most. SIDE 2: Track one, feelable diagonal scratch that sounds as a low-level tick throughout the track. No other feelable marks. Occasional tick or pop. Track 3 plays dead quiet. The music signal from piano, bass, reeds, brass and drums is strong, rich and clear, and full of tone. Early, rare, pre-1958 Flat Rim disc.
COVER: The 767 Lexington Ave., New York 21 cover has 2 three-inch seam-splits, extending from the opening, top and bottom (easily repairable). Otherwise, spines are worn and/or slightly peeling. Sticker glue upper right corner, front cover, and ¼” missing paint notch below glue. Corners slightly worn, lower right corner: 1½” bent/wrinkled. Reasonable gloss on front cover. No tape. BACK: Expected aging discoloration, “N.R.” in stamped circle. Ringwear lower back sleeve. No tape. “HIGH FIDELITY” Personnel includes Morgan, Clarence Sharp, Horace Silver, Wilbur Ware, “Philly” Joe Jones.
This LP was play-tested on a high-end system consisting of Music Hall MMF-7.3 turntable/Ortofon Bronze cartridge/Music Hall Moo Mat, Heed Audio Elixir integrated amplifier, Heed Quasar Phono stage and Quad S2 speakers.
