ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and very rare LP from Argo (RG54, English Decca pressing, green/silver label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features conductor René Leibowitz's unsurpassed account of Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire, originally recorded for Boîte à Musique (BAM 16), issued in the USA on Westminster (WN 18143), but receiving its finest possible pressing here on Argo.
Recorded in 1954, Leibowitz led the Virtuoso Chamber Ensemble (players from the London Symphony Orchestra) and soprano Ethel Semser in a raptly atmospheric performance that remains unrivalled in its insight and delineation.
Incidentally, the superlative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only, are by Leibowitz himself. The beautiful jacket design was executed by Crosby.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the front laminated jacket is EXCELLENT. There is slight fraying to the laminate on the rear, flipback portion of the jacket. There is also a minor scuff near the top of the front panel and light edgwear. However, there are no seamsplits, owners' markings, bends, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and very attractive in appearance – overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, this is a fine copy and the playback is quite good. However, those wanting CD silent surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
