Lenny Bruce's Interviews Of Our Times

Fantasy 7001 USA 1958 LP Vinyl: vg+
Cover: ex+ (minor lamination peeling) Original mega-rare red vinyl pressing of Lenny Bruce's first record, a strange and funny spoken word comedy album from the beat generation era, with a great cover parodying the beat-poet-intellectual-hipster stereotype (the liner notes claim they are all really "White Russians"). With plenty of clever impressions, joking references to the anti-communist crusade, and lampooning of bebop jazz culture and "High Fidelity Nuts"-- in other words, a wonderful satirical time capsule of late 1950s America from one of the greatest caustic comedic minds. Some tracks are excerpts from Bruce's live performances, and others are studio-produced sound collages with multiple tracks of voices and effects. The great experimental dj Henry Jacobs guest stars on at least 2 tracks, with hilarious interviews of himself as the characters Sholem Stein and Shorty Petterstein (who would later get his own solo album). Jacobs was an early electronic composer, pioneering radio artist at Berkely's legendary KPFA (home of Charles Amirkhanian), ethnic/folk music researcher, multimedia theater artist who organized the Vortex happenings with Jordan Belson (where he mixed early electronic music by composers like Toru Takemitsu, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Luciano Berio on a 40-speaker system), and satirist who worked with Lenny Bruce under various personas; he collaborated with Alan Watts and members of Harry Partch's ensemble, and as a poet was associated with the beat poetry movement (William S Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, etc.). Tracks are: The Interview; Djinni in the Candy Store; Enchanting Transylvania; Interview with Dr. Sholem Stein; The March of High Fidelity; Maria Ouspenskaya Interview; Father Flotsky's Triumph; All Broadway Musicals Sound The Same; Shorty Petterstein Interview. Just wanted to clear up some confusion here - The earliest issue of this album had the title as simply "Interviews Of Our Times". Later issues revised the title to "Lenny Bruce's Interviews Of Our Times" (presumably to cash in on Bruce's increasing fame). The version I have for sale here is the earliest pressing, with just "Interviews Of Our Times" printed on the cover, with Bruce's name appearing only in the fine print on the back.
