Description
Released in 1974, 'New Skin For The Old Ceremony' (C 33167) was Leonard Cohen's 4th studio album and now considered to be a masterwork. Michael Watts from Melody Maker magazine said in his review "....if the sentiments on some songs are reasonably open and apparent, dark, mysterious pools are everywhere and you suddenly find yourself swimming around in meaning that's hard to fathom but which draws you deeper all the same."
Sadly, the album did not sell very well and in fact, missed the US charts completely. Today, there is almost no one who comes close to the creativity, depth, and passion that is displayed here musically and lyrically on this timeless album by Leonard Cohen.
The copy I am offering is a 1st US pressing and naturally comes with the first, "banned" cover art. These jackets were not available for a very long time and were replaced by a "censored" version and eventually, one that had an entirely different cover.
A brief note on the Lp cover: Designer Teresa Alfiera adapted a woodcut image in 'Rosarium Philosophorum', a 16th century alchemical text much scrutinised by Carl Jung. Signifying the spiritual union of male and female principles, the nude figures were initially not "censored", meaning, a portion of the male genitalia was visible if looked at closely. However, nervous Columbia Records personnel soon decided to cover up this "offensive" detail with an additional angelic "wing"; thereby making these first "uncensored" Lp covers very collectible.
Lp Jacket: Excellent .....it is hard enough to find a 1st issue jacket let alone one that is also in this kind of condition. There is some minor "bubbling" to the paper and some age discoloration which is visible. Spine is still solid and legible....a really beautiful and fine example of this famous and controversial cover.
Fold-Open Photo/Lyric Sheet: Excellent(minus) ....a fine example of this important insert....some creasing and age-discoloration but other than that there is nothing of significance to mention.
Record: Near Mint.....very difficult to find a 1st pressing of this record that is not marred by excessive hairlines and marks. This one shines like new showing only the faintest signs of play. There is one mark on the song 'Who By Fire' but it did not elicit any sounds during playback. Great audio from start to finish.... hard to find a better 1st press copy of this album.
