Description
"Native Brazilian Music" Volume 1 C-83 "Selected and Recorded under the personal supervision of Leopold Stokowski." Four 78's record album. In the summer of 1940 as part of the "Good Neighbor Policy" Stokowski was called upon to tour South America to help create good relations and garner mutual understandings in light of the events that were occurring in Europe. While in Brazil, Stokowski, an admitted aficionado of South American music, enlisted the aid of his friend Brazilian composer, Villa-Lobos to bring together the greatest Brazilian musicians, arrangers and composers to record the popular Brazilian music of the time. To get the whole story about these recordings visit daniellathompson.com under the title "Stokowski Stalked". The author of this piece, Daniella Thompson, puts the story of these recordings in context to the times, how the recording sessions came about, the principles involved and the aftermath. Condition of the album NM-. Considering that this album was release in 1942 it is in amazing shape. The cloth binding has absolutely no fraying, no discoloration and is nice and tight. The gold lettering is as perfect as you can get. The colors are nice and bright. There are light rub marks on the front, back and insides. The corners are nice with just a bit of wear. The edges have some light wear with some chipping. The back cover has two spots along the edge that are slightly crushed. The records all grade at VG+ except for Side 5, VG and Side 7, NM-. There are vitually no spindle marks. I tried to grade as conservatively as possible as I don't usually deal with 78's. This is a wonderful collection of music by the top Brazilian artist of the time. And it has an amazing story. Unfortunately, it never got its due and its distribution was very limited and until recently almost forgotten. There are only a handful of these around and only a few have ever come up for auction. Following is the record number, artist, song title, writer, and genre:
