Description
Original 1983 U.S. pressing of Liquid Liquid’s legendary Optimo EP on 99 Records — one of the essential records of New York’s early-’80s downtown underground.
Produced by Ed Bahlman and recorded at Radio City Studio in NYC, Optimo sits at the intersection of No Wave, post-punk, funk and emerging dance music, with the stripped-down percussion and bass-driven sound that made Liquid Liquid enormously influential.
Most importantly, this is the record containing “Cavern” — the unmistakable bassline later appropriated for Grandmaster Melle Mel’s “White Lines (Don’t Don’t Do It).” The resulting dispute became inseparable from the history of both Liquid Liquid and 99 Records.
The original EP pairs:
Optimo • Cavern • Scraper • Out
Pressed at 45 RPM and issued as 99-11 EP on the original New York 99 Records label. The sleeve credits Scott Hartley, Richard McGuire, Sal Principato and Dennis Young, with mastering by Howie Weinberg.
Vinyl: VG++ — exceptionally clean-looking original copy with only light evidence of handling/play.
Jacket: VG++ — original striking Richard McGuire sleeve presents beautifully with minor age/edge wear.
An outstanding original copy of a record that connects NYC No Wave, post-punk, early hip-hop and underground dance culture in one release. Original copies are increasingly desirable, particularly when the notoriously wear-prone sleeve survives this clean.
