IN COMPARE "MEET THE RESIDENTS" SOUNDS NORMAL!!!): THE "THE WARNER BROS ALBUM" & THE "THE BABY SEX" LP.
NOW, MIX raw RESIDENTS + wild CROMAGNON, ADD COSMIC ABSTRACT ELECTRONICS, PLUS EQUALLY PRIVATE LO-FI PRODUCTION, PLUS SOME loner folk, outsider, Skip Spence VIBE, AND YOU HAVE THE ABSOLUTE improvised WEIRD-FREAK-OUT-PSYCH UNDERGROUND MASTERPIECE OF THE '80s, the AUTOGRAPHED/signed LP "Pop for the Unpopular" OF THE OBSCURE FUTURISTIC PAGAN BAND "Cal".
When I first encountered this record, I thought that this was a bootleg from the '69-'71 LUNATIC era of the RESIDENTS!!! Then I heard the "handmade" cosmic electronics and the Skip Spence vibes in some of the "songs" (if you could describe a mass of bad-trip nightmares as songs - with CAPTAIN BEEFHEART/MEET THE RESIDENTS SAX STABS!!!), but still the impression of an early '70s STONED weird freak-out obscurity failed to leave me... So primitive, so totemic, so cursed, so out there (like the crowling supernatural songs of Titans' prisoners in trance, as Philip Dick could describe it)!!!
