"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father, Who is in heaven." (Matthew 5:16) “Little Evelyn” stood for nothing, because of a sparkle that nature granted her—outside of the shell. But because she let His "light so shine," sure we’d be a spot light, if measurement of that light were the issue.
Like most people, my first reaction to “Little Evelyn” was PITY. My heart went out to this little lady who is 36 inches tall and has never taken a step in her life. She rolls around in a wheelchair, carefully manipulated by her feet. Like most women, she is conscious of weight and learns to keep herself at about 50 pounds. Shortly after birth, doctors diagnosed a spinal condition as congenital. Her bones are too fragile, as a child she was carried to church on a pillow. Her childhood days were made up of trips in and out of the hospital, surgery and frustration. She accepted these barriers as a part of her life—her cross to bear. She wasn’t expected to live beyond ten years, then early teen years. As usual, Evelyn has not been the ordinary case.
Each sound of a contraction “rolling on.”
As I got to know Evelyn better, sight of her handicap became a background factor. My reaction grew from pity to ADMIRATION. I looked beyond a complete outside, and into her beautiful inside. Too many times, physical beauty ends at this outside mask and is connected to a homeless physical ambition. Many folks think she might live a limited future. But not Evelyn. Her faith fills the gap. Her confidence inspires not only her goals, but also others along the way. I admire her talent, her singing, and all her fulfilling desires and dreams, except for a miniature store, she has out grown her stage name. She speaks for millions. She is not a “closet Christian,” she lets her light shine. She is not a recluse from the world. Evelyn goes out of her bright and artistic colors into the dark world. She shares love for learning and learning to love. She goes to school. She plays the piano. She writes. She cooks. She shops. She drives. She makes friends, and all with ability to teach others the art of contentment.
From pity and admiration, my reaction grew to LOVE. One cannot help but admire a person who has made so much out of what could be a difficult life. Her physical problems might suggest a tough time and one of great pity. I saw a person with potential. I saw a human structure of great accomplishment. There will be those that see her and call her dumb, because she is quiet. I tell her to read their shirt sizes.
She’s a comedienne to little children with her tricks and facial expressions. She would probably be “Number-One Favorite Comedienne” if she tried.
She has no intentions to climb the stage of professional entertainment any longer. Little children call “Little Evelyn” to churches and homes, not to make them laugh, but to bless their lives.
I honor her today because of her goals. I admire her more than most people I know because of her deep sincerity to Christ. The moment she rolls into her house, the Holy Spirit reaches for you. It doesn’t take her long to recognize others’ needs. She has written music. She has sung to audiences and has been blessed by that musical touch. One can’t be touched, unless the one above has first touched—Evelyn.
Evelyn does not love reason for others to pity her, but her life demands admiration and love. Her life, abilities, talents and experiences can all be summed up in one phrase...“FOR THE GLORY OF GOD”.
