Description
Towards the end of 1963, magazines, national newspapers and the local press alike seized the opportunity to make a little extra money exploiting the Beatles success. Few were quite as justified as the band's hometown paper, the Liverpool Echo.
This 8-Page Pop Special is subtitled 'Mersey Sound '63' because it celebrates the great year enjoyed by all the local bands, but immediately below the sub-title is the strapline 'The Year of the [Beatles]', because they are the subject of the large colour photograph below and they get the bulk of the attention inside: features on a local artist drawing the band, a vox pop of local people's feelings about the band, a page of photos of the leather-clad band playing the Cavern in 1961, a page of pictures of their appearance on Juke Box Jury and a Beatle Game. There's an open letter from Cilla Black on the front and a page on Gerry on the Pacemakers, and a double spread of photos of other hit acts of '63.
There are great adverts for an Owen Owen Beatles Night Dress I've never seen anywhere else, and an incredibly rare Sturlas Beatles Bag, as well as an ad for NEMS record store.
Measures 25 x 17 inches (approx 63 x 43 cm). There is some obvious wear along the horizontal machine fold, with a small hole where it meets the left hand fold. There's also a vertical fold as is common with large format broadsheets newspapers. Some creases. Intact.
