The decision To include AofA "Satanic Mass" (blatantly played and cobbled togetherFrom various sources, including Anton LaVey's own tedious brandof commercialized Hollywood Satanism and Dennis Wheatley novels) perhaps overshadows any other aspectof Coven's debut album. The fact is that whilst its inclusion was controversial enough at The TimeTo get some temporary publicityFORTheband ,The album's reputation has suffered in retrospectFOR The inclusionof 13 minutesof embarrassing and often tedious Satanic ritual which goes absolutely nowhere.
It's A crying shame, because ifYou actually ignoreThe last track there's some solidPsychedelic rock with progressive momentsOn this album. Thematically more reminiscent of Dennis Wheatley and Hammer Horror movies than anything more sinister, TheTo evenThe (STILL quite cartoonish) anticsof Venom or Mercyful Fate inThe 1980s, let aloneThe extreme TheBLACK metal scene would reach inThe 1990s, but it does offerA precedentFOR acts such as Blood Ceremony, Uncle Acid and evenELECTRIC WIZARD , with Blood Ceremony in particular coming closeToThe Coven Sound in their morePsychedelic moments.
