description:
Perhaps the greatest release in DG's venerable Avant Garde series, with 2 essential experimental compositions. Presque Rien No.1, Ferrari's most famous work, is a landmark piece of sound art, a minimalist reduction of musique concrete into a multitrack montage of long, unprocessed field recordings. Ferrari spent weeks recording the early morning sounds of a small fishing village; subtitled "daybreak on the beach," the work is both beautiful and startling in its simplicity, though it can be quite dense and hypnotic. Societe II, subtitled "and if the piano were a female body," is a Kagel- and Cecil Taylor-influenced piece described by Ferrari as "basically a number of musicians who, bit by bit, gather together around a piano and make it suffer... There's noisy music in there, music-theatre, tonal and atonal music, all mixed up in a joyful patchwork..." It is performed by Gerard Fremy (piano), Jean-Pierre Drouet (percussion), Sylvio Gualda (percussion), and the Ensemble Instrumental de Musique Contemporaine de Paris under Konstantin Simonovich.

artist info from album notes etc.:
Ferrari was an electroacoustic composer who studied under Honegger, Alfred Cortot, and Messiaen, and along with Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry helped found the INA-GRM musique concrete studios (which would become a center of study for pioneers like Francois Bayle, Michel Chion, Jean-Claude Risset, Francois Bernard Mache, Ivo Malec, Bernard Parmegiani, Michel Redolfi, Ragnar Grippe, Jon Appleton, Jean Michel Jarre, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Edgar Varese, and Iannis Xenakis). Gualda has worked as an avant garde percussionist with Xenakis, Andres Lewin Richter, Martial Solal, Elisabeth Chojnacka, Pierre Boulez, and Luciano Berio. Should be of interest to fans of Joseph Beuys, George Maciunas, Yoko Ono, Marcel Duchamp, futurism, Luigi Russolo, and John Cage.

I use new record mailers from Cameron Packaging (which I have determined are the best and most protective) reinforced with cardboard inserts and bubble wrap padding. All records are shipped with poly plastic sleeves and with the vinyl outside of the cover to prevent damage. All packages are completely sealed with strong packing tape covering all openings.
